    The Soundproofing Thread

What did you use to soundproof your studio/ practice space? How did you deal with the windows? How did you deal with basement ceilings/ floors of the main level? And, how stupidly loud can you be with little or no volume outside? I recently bought a house with a basement and I'll soundproof...

    mAudio 49e + CW HS 2K4 = difficult timing?

Thanks for the info. The important part for me is getting the notes into the computer with the right timing so I don't have to mess with sticking the notes on the grid; once they're there it is easy enough to edit the velocities of the individual notes. I haven't been able to figure out how to...

suggestion for a 19" guitar amp?

With guitar equipment, the preamp generates most of your tone as Farview pointed out, and the poweramp makes enough power to drive the speakers. You will need some kind of preamp to drive the poweramp, and good speaker cabinets make a difference especially at drumset volume levels. Tube...

    mAudio 49e + CW HS 2K4 = difficult timing?

I picked up an mAudio 49e MIDI controller so that I could do recordings of the MIDI drums in Cakewalk Homestudio 2004 w/o using the piano roll. The 49e is going in through a USB port and I'm using the Edirol VSC for the MIDI output. The 49e works, but the timing of it is wierd. Sometimes the...

suggestion for a 19" guitar amp?

Look for the Mesa 20/20, 50/50, and Simulclass...I think it's the 2/95. There are also companies that make solid state power amps for guitar, like TubeWorks (no tubes involved...), and general solid state power amps, like Carvin, Crown, etc. If I were you I'd stick with all tube, and I'd even...

    18 watt amps

Check out ax84.com, in particular the P1 theory document on the P1 project page, and the two load lines papers somewhere on the site. And read up on safety. The 18W is a relatively simple amp, although you should not build your own amp expecting it to cost less than a commercial amp. The...

    Building Tube Amp

Hammond trannys sound good but Heyboers sound better and are still a lot less expensive than the MM trannys. OEI are also a good choice. I'd get the Heyboers from metroamp.com if you can. C

help me with my amp project..... Marshall 1987

For the chassis holes, you can use drill bits plus a holesaw set, or if you want nicer holes, try either a chassis punch set or a stepped drill bit which goes up to 7/8" (which will do all holes except the power tube sockets).

    Building Tube Amp

The Marshall dual volume circuits, esp the 1987/1959, are the sound of rock IMO. Stick a post PI master volume on them a la Orange and you'll wonder why you ever liked a Crate. :D ax84.com for info re building, the November project is a modded 1987 circuit. Sockets and trannys from...

    Distortion Pedals

The DS-1 will give you some pretty harsh clipping and works better through cleaner amp settings IMO. It has it's sound, complete with the scoopy mids. Sometimes I like it, other times not. The Blues Driver is more like an overdrive a la the SD-1 and tubescreamers IIRC. If you like the sound...

    Best cheap 10-15w amp?

Electar Tube 10, all tube, $100, http://www.musicyo.com/product_specs.asp?pf_id=300 It looks like they're out right now. It is one of the best deals going IMO. The amp is your basic champish style circuit with a small speaker. Add $30 for JJ tubes instead of the stock sovteks and you've...

    speaker choice - governer/vintage 30?

A friend of mine tried a Governor and Tonker in a closed back 212 and gave them a glowig review when used together. I believe the Governor is Eminences V30 clone (as opposed to the V12 which is their V30-ish speaker with "smoother highs"). If you're looking at the V30, you might also look at...

HS2K4: way to view multiple drum tracks/maps for editing?

I'd like to use several tracks for drums to have better control over the levels and EQ. Probably BD, toms, snare, and cymbals. Is there a way to view/edit them all on one grid? Edit: looks like the piano roll will show one track, do you know how to show multiple tracks in the piano roll?

Guitarists: What do you do to increase speed & dexterity?

Steve Vai's 10 hour workout. Which was apparently 30 hours when it was republished in one of the guitar mags 4/04. Scottgman's exercises look similar to some of the exercises in there. Also try 1234, 2341, 3412, 4123 going up each string, then move everything up one fret on the top E and go...

    Amp Guru's!.....A Question for Ya!

The best way to get cranked Marshall tone is to crank a non-master Marshall, IMO. Though you're on the right track because every song needs a cranked Marshall. (flame away! :D ) Look for the Marshall 4001 aka the Studio 15. They can be had for around $300. Maybe the Orange AD15, post PI...

Not gonna happen. Circuit layout and lead dress (wiring) play a significant role in the sound.

    more important: guitar or amp?

If you can live with your guitar but dislike your amp, get an amp. In general, I believe you should get the best amp you can and get a guitar in the $300 range because there are a number of decent guitars in that range. $3000 Zakk Wylde LP and an MG 15 practice amp, or... $3000 Zakk Wylde 100W...
