    Ibanez or Fender

I'm a regular guitarist, not a bassist, but I needed a cheap bass for recording a few years back and headed over to GC to play everything in the under-$250 range... Yamaha, Ibanez, and a couple of others. For me, the Ibanez played the easiest, but the Yam (rbx-170) sounded and felt the best. I...

    Tube amps >$350

From what I've heard and read, I'd lean toward the Peavey 50-watt tube model--under $400 after some dealing. I had such a Peavey many years ago, and I actually preferred it to my Fender Twin for some of the stuff we played. Don't know if the current Peaveys are as good, but I'd suggest adding...

Recommend a fairly inexpensive solid state amp for abrasive tones

Yeah, I forgot about the Lab's compressor. That was a big deal for its age, and my first real experience with compressing guit. I now recall, too, that a very good guitarist in the 70s, Ronnie Montrose, led me to that amp. He used it for an entire solo album, very impressive stuff. Come to think...

Recommend a fairly inexpensive solid state amp for abrasive tones

Thanks, Bruce, for reminding me of my old Lab L5 that I sold for a song when I needed money. Man, I liked that amp and still regret selling it. I don't remember much about the overdriven tones, but everyone liked the jazzier stuff we could coax out of it.

    Does anyone play mediums?

I generally use 11s on my electrics when I need cleaner solo tones. I like 12s even more but have a harder time with bends and vibrato. 11's are a good compromise for multi-skill work. To my ears, the sound of 11s is definitely more solid than when I string with 9s or 10s, which can sound a bit...

I'm always happy when I meet a fellow progger. Your work was cranking in my office today, and I smiled more than once at the prog-rock sensibility, skill, and care you've shown. Keep it going, man. My own stuff's not nearly as well recorded as yours--my humble studio and weak engineering skills...

Time for a professional electrician. If you were shocked that badly, don't mess around.

IK mutlimedia's ARC system (any good?)

Generally positive review in the newest issue of Recording mag. Not seen as a total fix but as a useful aid in certain situations.

    Most technical instrumental album

If I take 'technical' to include composition, arrangement, performance, and recording--and leave out symphonic music--then the following groups/albums are a few that quickly come to mind. Older... Return to Forever (almost anything) Mahavishnu Orchestra (") Yes (Tales or CTTE) Chick Corea...

Songs to learn to help my soloing.

Been thinking about this one while working around the house tonight. Yeah, Steely Dan's great for anything related to music, including the recording process itself. Recent S.D. albums (like 'Two Against Nature') are among my favorites for reference purposes. Even though blues isn't my primary...

Songs to learn to help my soloing.

Elliot, my suggestion is to learn stuff you already love. I know that's not probably not the response you want, but honestly, many of us here have devoured the guitar work of our idols. That's what gave me the strength to sit for hours on end learning every note of a song. Without that love, it...

When + why do YOU multitrack guitars

Nothing much to add to everyone's good thoughts, only to repeat that doubling parts is just one more tool for making interesting sound. I often double parts, especially backing guitars, but occasionally I'll double a lead or part of a lead (e.g., doubling the last part of a solo can build...

    any ultra cheap bass recommendations

Needed a cheap bass for recording a few years back and headed over to GC to play everything in the under-$250 range... Yamaha, Ibanez, and a couple of others. For me, the Ibanez played the easiest, but the Yam (rbx-170) sounded and felt the best. I took the Yam home for a measly $160. By the...

7506 Headphones took a dump...what to replace them with?

I like my 280s a lot, more than the Sony's you had, and have been using them for years for all tracking. My newer AT-M50s, though, are by far the best-sounding closed cans I've ever used. Comfy, too, although they're not quite as snug as the Senns if that's an issue.

    need drumming inspiriation?

Good list. I'd add King Crimson's stuff for Bruford, too. In fact, if you can figure out the menu, Crimon's 'Deja Vroom' DVD is a riveting Bruford ride--there's an option to choose any one member of the band, with a different camera and sound mix that highlight that member. Bruford's amazing...

    Another question about inexpensive monitors

Lum, I can't help you with those particular monitors, but I can mention that monitors with a 5" cone may eventually require a subwoofer--if you're recording music with important low end. I'm one of many who bought a 5" model, initially thought the bass response was adequate, soon became tired...

Event alp5 or event tr6? help to choose

Welcome, Cochiche. I haven't used either of those monitors although my tendency would be to go for the Event because of its larger speaker. Better yet, I'd suggest buying both if you can and comparing them in your studio space. That's what I did--and only one made me smile. Good luck.

    M-Audio BX5a Monitors

Congrats, Phob! You did your homework and found some monitors that work for you. Can't beat that. I haven't heard the BX5 "a" series, but my older BX5 + matching SBX sub has been an excellent system in my tiny studio. When I bought them, I auditioned several models in my studio and the M-Audios...
