    Flattest response budget headphones?

Ditto on the ATH-M50. Best closed cans I've used.

    Headphones for Mixing and Listening?

Yeah, most of us have learned that mixing on cans isn't a great idea because the mixes don't often transfer well to other formats. But I'm not alone in using cans to rough out mixes since I need to keep things quiet late at night (family sleeping). I always move to regular monitors for final...

Get away with a cheap sub?

You may want to watch for a used M-Audio "SBX" sub, the older version. It's a great 8" sub that features a bass-management system, allowing you to set the cut-off freq for your BX5s. I've been using one for a few years with good results.

Help with Yamaha AW-16g audio workstation

Hey Bud, Great machine--I've been using one happily for about 7 years. When you add a song to your CD burn list, it'll use whichever virtual track you have currently have highlighted in the Monitor/Stereo Track area. If you want to read more detailed directions, head over to one of the...

    Guitar amp modelers

Just to add to the discussion... http://emusician.com/tutorials/showdown-clubhouse-amp-software/index.html I always enjoy equipment shoot-outs since previous biases play less of a role. In this shoot-out, the panel of pros was able to correctly identify the real amp or sim about 38% of the...

    Guitar amp modelers

Can't agree with the "haters" part, but I appreciate the gist of your previous post--that people's needs differ. An unsolicited suggestion: just tap into the large group of folks here, like you (and me), who record our music for limited or no commercial use. They're easy to spot if you hang...

    Guitar amp modelers

Good to know about the update, John. Thanks. Yeah, I know that some folks a buying a back-up unit, just in case. I may do the same although mine's given me no trouble during the past 8 years.

    Guitar amp modelers

The old and discontinued J-Station's the fav of many old-school guitarists, especially those (like me) who grew up with a Fender Twin. The good news is that it's often available for under $100 at ebay. Nothing beats a good amp, but with some careful tweaking, the J's a fine alternative when the...

Cheap Matched SDC Condensers for Acoustic Guitar?

The Tape Op review's two pages (July/Aug 2009), with mics broken down by price point and a lot of disagreement evident. Here's the overall group of mics that received 7 or more votes from the 21-member panel: In alphabetical order: AKG C451 EB AT 4021 B & K 4011 Beyer MC 930 Charter Oak M900...

Cheap Matched SDC Condensers for Acoustic Guitar?

There's a good SDC shoot-out review, including mention of Richie, in the latest Tape Op mag. Has anyone already posted the results? If not, I'll add them later this weekend.

Great! And the good news--after a lengthy break-in period, they'll sound even better.

    All-purpose headphones? Wisdom needed

Guys, I just noticed that the M50s have dropped in price lately--under $100 on ebay and around $125 from retailers. As someone who's used and enjoyed my Senn 280s for many years, and who's used both models of the Sonys mentioned, I urge you to audition the M50s when you need some new cans. IMHO...

    All-purpose headphones? Wisdom needed

I always enjoy Richie's thoughtful posts, but I just want to offer some congrats, Matthew. The M50s are great, and it's always nice to know what the OP decides to do. Head over to the AT site to learn more about your new cans.

    All-purpose headphones? Wisdom needed

+1 for the M50s. Good headphones definitely have their place in many home studios, especially when family members or neighbors aren't as interested in our music as we are. We do what we gotta do, sigh, but no argument--good monitors hold a higher place in the chain.

    Cans?

Senn 280s for tracking (great isolation, good sound), and Audio Technica ATH-M50s for more critical listening--and enjoyment. Of the half-dozen models I've tried, the M50s are easily the best-sounding closed cans to my ears. I hear the Beyer 770s are contenders, but I've never worked with them.

Best Mic Pre under $300 Poll..

Just read the entire thread--what a great read! I leaned a bit, laughed some, and enjoyed the occasional detours, especially the disagreement about "cutting corners". I also felt better about my recent order of a DMP3, arriving tomorrow. Thanks to all.
