    Bigger monitors or subwoofer?

You're facing the same situation that I did a year ago with my M-Audio BX5s. I picked up the SBX 8" sub ($200 on sale)--problem solved, after carefully integrating the sub. Form the research I did, I learned that 5" monitors are particularly well suited to a small sub unless you're working in a...

    Event 20/20 vs NS10ms

There's a nice little essay about the NS10 on the last page of the newest issue of "Recording" mag. It seems that the guy who designed it recently died, and the article pays tribute to his work. Like Fishmed mentions above, the engineer who wrote the article expressly notes that few people ever...

second set of monitors and bass response

About a year ago, I was also having trouble getting the low end right with my BX5s. I added the matching SBX sub--problem solved. Cool's right about the overall sonic change, at least in my room. The BX5s sound much better now that they're not struggling to deal with the low freqs, and the SBX...

    Terrible mix translation...beginner monitors?

C, Most of us have apapted to and end up liking our own choices of monitors (I use M-Audios with good results). I'd suggest doing what some of us typically do: buy 2-3 of your top choices and then compare them in your own home. The few extra shipping dollars won't matter a year from now, and...

What Fuzz Box Did George Use On the White Album?

As did Steve Howe, with often great results. I still have one kicking around, but I seldom use it because it's so darned noisy. J.

Are There Any Drum Machines Designed For Live Use?

Bryan, I've never used a drum machine live, but if I did, I'd look for multiple outputs, above all. Trusting a machine to balance and EQ a drum kit is asking for bad sound. Multiple drum tracks in the studio--and on the road--would be my choice. J.

Thinking about a Taylor or other High-End Acoustic

You hit it right on the nose there, Sean. When I buy a guitar, I play as many as I can, preferably in quiet rooms, until one speaks to me, sings to me. That one's always the winner, and I've found that it's not necessarily the most expensive. Enjoy the search. J.

Thinking about a Taylor or other High-End Acoustic

Heya, Sean. My cousin just got back from two tours in Iraq. You guys are the best. Thanks for all you do, man. Listen, about the Taylors, I don't own one, but I'd suggest picking up one of the 3-4 compilation CDs put out by Taylor and Windham Hill--"Sounds of Wood & Steel" (1,2,3, etc.). In...

I HATE THIS when it happens!

Congrats on your repair, Hornet. I've read a lot about the Boss multitrackers and have the idea that they're great machines for a certain audience but can be frustrating for others. This SOS review, in particular, led me in other directions when I was in the market...

I HATE THIS when it happens!

Hey there, Hornet. Very sorry to hear about your sticky knob (no pun intended). I seem to remember reading some feedback about this problem over at the Yammie forum a while back. Do you still visit there? If not, I'd be happy to post your question there for you. Just let me know...

Staying under $200: Multi-effects choices (pretty much two?)

Almy, my favorite low-price processor is the discontinued Johnson J-Station, which is one of the few processors/modelers I've used that seem to excel at producing clean tones. I'm able to use it for both my rock and jazz work although (like any of these processors), it takes some time to tweak...

    Studio Project C1, AT2020, or NT1a???

Velvet, I haven't owned any of the mics you mentioned, but I agree with Cardio that the SP B-1 is a great all-purpose mic for $100. I use it on only acoustic stringed instruments like it so much that I bought a second. I don't know how it works for vocals since my voice reeks. But the forum has...

    Beatles 'n' Beach Boys

Interesting thread! I thought of it last night while listening to new versions of some of my old 60s' favorites. Maybe someone has mentioned this elsewhere (if so, sorry), but the newest Beatles' "Love" CD, for Cirque du Soleil, is certainly something unusual. I picked it up after reading so...

    Monitors Problem: Hummmmmmmmmmm

And on a lighter note... I had the same problem recently and traced it to an ac strip/surge protector. I replaced that, problem solved. Like with anything, isolating the problem step by step usually solves the puzzle. Good luck, J.

Optical ins and out for home stereo?

Thanks for your help, guys. I didn't realize that the optical cable could be had so cheaply, so I think I'll give it a try. Also, that's a good point about the conversion to analog if I use the tone controls--I'll use the EQ bypass and see how things sound. Take care, J.

Optical ins and out for home stereo?

Folks, just wondering if anyone has experience using the optical ins/outs for a CD player and stereo receiver. I understand the advantage technically, but would any difference in sound be noticeable and worth the extra cable price in a modest home system? Thanks for any insight, J.

    Headphones/ i/o

Slink, I have a pair of Sennheiser rs-130s (open cans) that came with stereo rca jacks as well as 1/4 and mini adapters. The Senn rep told me that they'll handle any line- or speaker-level signal. By the way, the closed version of these cans is the RS-140, and both are RF models. That said, an...
