EQ (Enigmatic Question)
Yes.
Don't.
Unless it's absolutely necessary, that is.
Actually, you need to give more specific information in your question. Generally speaking, always try to get the best sound in the recording stage by experimenting with mic positions first before you reach over...
I bought this gem with the nice brushed aluminum case a couple of years ago and it's quite nice. Very clean sound, even with the gain turned up all the way. Offhand I can't recall exactly, but I think it cost about $220.00. Is there anyone else around here who has one or has used one before...
Or...
...you could try baking the tape. I'm not joking! This proceedure actually works. Try this link for more information: www.tangible-technology.net
There is also a thread on this very subject over on the tascam website (www.tascam.com). Hold your mouse over "Support," then click on online...
Do NOT use Type IV tape...
... contrary to what Dr. Collosus said! (All his other advice is right on!) Type IV is METAL tape. Your 4-track's heads were not designed for that! Metal tape has metal particles in it that will grind down your heads like fine sandpaper. Type II tape is what you want...

Happy New Year! Here are a few more to consider:
Spirit - The Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus
Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway
Nektar - A Tab In The Ocean; Remember The Future
Anthony Phillips - The Geese And The Ghost
The Moody Blues - Days Of Future Past; In Search Of...
Track Rat: Steve Howe - "Beginnings"
"Olias" is a fantastic concept album. It still sounds fresh to my ears. I've never heard anything quite like it since.
"Queen II" is sort of a loose concept album with its "Side White" and "Side Black." That and "A Night At The Opera" are the best things...
Well...
Been there, done that. Had to sell my VS880EX because I went overseas - didn't want to risk damage in transit, that sort of thing. Yeah, I know exactly what you mean about rewinding. Thing is, I got the 488 because it was available in Pusan when I walked into this one particular store...
I'm getting a laptop, too
... for Christmas, so it will be my first foray into the world of PC recording. I'm very interested to know why it's NOT being highly recommended here. I just want to use it to multitrack at home - no on-stage sequencing, etc. I don't really understand what you mean...
Here's the deal: A few years ago I had a Yamaha MT8X, original version. I did a lot of recording on that machine, and for what it was, it served me very well. These days I live in Korea, where for the time being I have a TASCAM 488 mkII. Right now as I'm typing this, I'm back in Ohio for...
Brian May
Ahhhh.... my HERO!
Gotta love everything about the man, his guitar, and his PLAYING! Now there's one guy who always manages to sound fresh. Quite the astronomer too, I'm told. Published papers on the movements of interplanetary dust. (!!)
As for the movie credits thing, Brian...
Yo Hornet!
You say you've got a 488 that you're going to give to your nephew? That's pretty sweet of you. However, if you're interested in selling, then "hold the portastudio" for just a second. I just got off another board (the TASCAM site, under the "portastudios" forum) on which I was trying...
You know, the re-vamped Silvertone 1457, amp-in-the-case thing (the Mona, or so they call it)? I've heard they're a vast improvement over the old Silvertones. There's also a Les Paul-styled one called the Lisa.
But Is the company still out there? I seem to have trouble connecting with their...
Sony? Quantegy? Maxell? TDK?
Well.... choices, choices, choices.....
The Quantegy seems like a good tape - their site gives EXTENSIVE specs, too, but I'm also taking into account Green Hornet's comments. Right now, I'm leaning on going with the Sony, but if possible, I'd really like to get an...
digital
Yeah, it would be nice to go digital, and I was sorta there once (Roland vs880ex - had to sell it before going overseas), but I'm trying to fight the urge to be a gear slut and just go with what I have. I'm just making demos for myself, but I want them to be as good as humanly possible...
Point taken ... AVOID FUJI, EVERYONE!
Thanks, zagrad! I'll definitely remember to NOT try that particular brand.
Now that I've done a bit more reseach, it seems that the way to go is with the Quantegy 472 60-minute cassettes.

P.S. You might want to thoroughy clean your machine...
Hi again, MT8X dude!
As for monitoring with headphones....
It's usually a must for tracking and listening to overdubs, but getting monitors for mixing down to 2-track stereo is damn near essential. Mixing down with headphones won't let you get an accurate picture of what your music will sound...
We all know that tape formats degrade over time, but what about CDs? I've heard of cases in which CDs actually fell apart.
I want to know this because, before they deteriorate any further, I'd eventually like to archive all my old cassette-based recordings on some other more durable medium. Cds...
Thanks ...and is it AVAILABLE?
I honestly thought that Quantegy was strictly an open-reel format. I didn't realize they made cassettes.
Are these available? I've NEVER seen them.
Thanks to you and Green Hornet for the info!
