Do You Make Money off ur Studios?? Hop In

i agree with this. One interesting thing that's happening in and around my studio is that there is a growing group of artists and musicians that are sort of centered around my place. (on reflection this sounds like ego, but i assure it's really not. I wasn't even aware of it until someone...

    Warning:Xtreme Newb Alert...Which cables do i need?

i know this seems decidedly un-newb advice, but i wish that when i started out, somebody showed me how to solder a variety of audio cable configurations, so i could have saved thousands over the years. My advice is learn how 1/4 jacks are wired, how XLR jacks are wired, balanced vs unbalanced...

that is something i couldn't agree with more.

    RANT: Over-precisionification of music

i agree. my feeling is a minimum 3 piece ensemble should be able to perform a song in a steady tempo. If a solo guy or a duo need a click to hold it together thats fine. last time i checked, dynamics were integral to a performance.

Do You Make Money off ur Studios?? Hop In

i started on a tascam 424 cassette recorder. I learned how to make decent records with a couple sm57's and the 424 mixing down to a tape deck. If i had $1500 i would buy an adat, a mackie 16 channel split mixer, and with the $400 left over, 2 sm57's and a Rode nt1. then, get a friends band...

A new Nate and Brendan track

i mixed to tape, so i think overall, it was a bit saturated. i'm going to bypass the tape and mix down to cd the next mix session i do with this one.

we don't use daw's to record, it's all outboard recorders and tape. however, if i bring the mix into the box to pre-master it, i'll check out the noise. But i do think that noise is an artifact of the gain increase in the stereo recorder, i'll check it out

A new Nate and Brendan track

thanks man. yeah it is left heavy. it was sort of a tracking mix, with another 1/2 hour of tinkering before the next session started so it was rushed a little.

it could be compression. i'm going to have to keep an eye on that. or get better compressors :)

A new Nate and Brendan track

actually, i'm not sure that's the reason. and because of that i'm going to have to review it, because i don't like to hear that there is distortion i'm not fully aware of :)

A new Nate and Brendan track

i had to up the gain once it was mixed down to the masterlink. it's the first time i used the gain render function and i think it distorted out a little. I won't be using it again in that severity

A new Nate and Brendan track

dunno. something whacky happened in tracking it. that's the one that would get redone. the other we'll reamp and try to settle in the mix a bit

thanks Travis! I agree on the solo guitar and it's getting re-tracked. We lost our fender twin to a friends tour, and were using an AC30 which doesn't do jazzy soft solo guitar justice AT ALL. And he could have played it better. Thanks for your comments.
