    788 vs DP01

Nope, but I have seen it with my own eyes. Much more aesthetically pleasing than the DP-01 - kinda slimline and very black - however the specs I saw looked quite similar (still not 24 bit).

    788 vs DP01

I used to have a 788. It's and excellent machine. Can't say I ever had any problems with the pre-amps though most of the sources I recorded were pretty loud (yes, even the singer I was playing with at the time!). Mine is still going strong after 6 years - have passed it on to my current singer...

best way to use compressor with Tascam2488

Yes, I always track without compression because that encourages the performer to control their playing dynamics naturally. I only use an insert compressor where an instrument level is inconsistent in the mix or occasionally for effect e.g. increase sustain. I think a little compression on...

best way to use compressor with Tascam2488

I use the mic effects compressors on individual elements (insert) and the dynamics compressor on the whole mix. Typical settings I use would be a ratio of 3:1, low threshold and fast response on the bass, lead vocals, snare and kick drum. I sometimes also apply to acoustic or clean guitars at a...

    First Rig Horror Stories

I was very lucky in that my dad played guitar and made sure I started off with something OK - a Yamaha RGX (can't remember the model number now). It was a bit beaten up but it played fine. It's still at my folks house and when I go there I always try and pick it up for 10 mins or so in some sort...

    2488

A very interesting question this. The front socket that feeds Input H is a Hi-Z interface for matching the output of instruments (i.e. same a s D.I. box). However, I'm never sure if active (as opposed to passive pickups) should be treated in this way. Anyone any thoughts? Either way I can't tell...

    2488

    In 2001 I brought a 788 for £650. 5 Years later I brought a 2488 for £600. That's progress.

    2488

Personally I don't think the screen size is much of a problem unless you want to look ar waveforms. The contrast is pretty rubbish though! Still, it's not like a computer based system where all the information is on the screen - there are plenty of bright lights all over the 2488. :)

    TasCam 488 Trashed by UPS

I heard about a studio that sent their ADAT for a service and when the courier brought it back he accidentally reversed over it! My day job is in distribution and I've seen how some couriers treat fragile items. Frankly I'm amazed there aren't more breakages. There's a certain printer...

There's the Ion IED04 (http://www.ion-audio.com/ied04.php) which is basically an Alesis SR16 Drum Machine built into a drum pad. Haven't tried it myself but had an SR16 for 10 years. Drum sounds are very usable if perhaps not the most up-to-date and you can either record the patterns you play...

Have you thought of something like a Yamaha QY100? http://www.yamaha-europe.com/yamaha_europe/uk/10_musical_instruments/70_synthesizer/60_sequenzer_drumcomputer/10_sequenzer_drumcomputer/10_no_series/040_QY100/index.html

I dunno, I've never heard any drum machine or computer get remotely close to the dynamics and feel of Brian Viglione's (Dresden Doll) playing. Drum machines have there uses and can sound really great but I guess I prefer the human

LOL that's a bold statement! Various setups fulfil differing requirements. For instance there's one local studio that is basically someone's garage and another based around a portastudio in an industrial unit. I've recorded bands in empty theatre auditoriums and last time we recorded in an...

    Charging

Haha yeah I've no doubt London is a lot more expensive than Notts. None of the studios we've looked at are Pro-Tools (oddly enough Logic seems to be the software of choice amongst the local budget shacks). I'm more interested in the size and quality of the live rooms plus analog consoles as this...

One local studio is doing £12.50 p/h weekdays including engineer. Looking at your gear as say you've actually got a better set up though they are more geared to recording live bands. The studio my band is planning on using for our next record has quoted us £480 for 4 days (inc. engineer). Most...

    .....What

I've been watching this saga unfold for the last month or so on the L6 forum. To be honest it's a bit of a cop out if you ask me. I mean if Line 6 models are so good then why would they need valves? I used to be a POD user and I still have a UX1 Toneport but the recent Line 6 releases have me...

    Opinions on EQ and Compressor

Never owned a dBX but used to have both a 3630 and an MEQ 230. Never had any complaints about either to be honest.

    2488

I really the 2488. I work with mainly real instruments these days (occasional drum machine aside) and I think it suits this well. 24 tracks is plenty enough for me and 8 inputs is just about enough to capture a complete band live. I've had various Tascams over the years (Porta 03, 414, 788) and...

    2488

I don't have the manual in pdf format but if you go to http://www.tascam.de and selected "Discontinued Products" then choose 2488 from the dropdown menu you should be able to download it from there. Hope that helps Ben
