    Best soundcard/mic combo?

Ditto on the soundblaster. I was looking into the soundblaster audigy too, but there are dedicated soundcards for recording that blows SB out of the water. And you'll save money too with the M-Audio Audiophile 2496 for $150. The Audigy will run you at least $200. As far as Mics go, I hear...

    New, Cheap Isolation Tracking Headphones

Got the new headphones yesterday, just like Harvey said. haven't had too much time to listen, but sounds great so far. Con: the cord sure is friggin short. Gotta stand over my mixer to listen. Anyway, thanks Harvey. The response to my email was prompt.

    Compressor dilemma...

I think u seniors got stuck on his "upper-level newbie" call and missed the entire question. It wasn't about compression. It was just about which compressor you think would give more bang for the buck. But what do i know, i'm as low-level as you get.

    Computer to TV

kremit's right but your picture quality is really gonna suck compared to even a cheap pc monitor. You ever watch a DVD on tv then watch on pc? It's a huge difference in quality.

    Extreme Newbie...

All user interfaces are intimidating when you first look at it. N-track's interface is actually much simpler than most others. What you really need to do is put plenty of personal quality time into using the software and fiddle with the buttons to see what they do. The online manual and...

    A "Pro-war" but "Anti-Bush" Song

Don't like it lyrics. Don't agree with the politics. Don't care for the song in general. The only group I've ever heard successfully sing about politics is Pink Floyd.

    No Sound From Computer

Most likely, you don't have the audio cable connected from your cd drive to the sound card. I assume you're plugging your headphones/speakers straight into the output on the cd drive. That's why u can hear the cd playing in the player. You should check the 4-pin audio cable connection.

    Microphone terminology

I posted this question over on the newbie forum but hope to get better feedback over here. What are you guys talking about when you say a microphone is bright, flat, dark, etc?? Is there a website that I can hear the difference between what is bright and what is not?

    New, Cheap Isolation Tracking Headphones

Heck, I figure for 25 bucks I'd give these mugs a try. I've been using a Sony that's pretty decent. Those cost me 30 at best buy. I'm curious to hear the difference. I also have a 2 year old that has managed to destroy a portion of my DVD collection and a dvd player. I'll let him loose on...

    A couple of newbie questions

#1. Where can I "hear" what you guys are talking about when you are describing microphones as being "bright" or "dark"? #2. When editing a track with effects, is it usually done on the whole track or part and parcel? For instance, I've been trying to edit vocal tracks with, say echo or...

    n-track with external wave editor

Yea, there's a 40 day trial period. You can only record 2 tracks. Although I don't think that limitation really works cuz I haven't had any problems doing 4. No effects. And last night I tried fiddling with the volume envelope (whatever the hell that does) and I could only mess with the...

    Cakewalk SONAR vs. SP C1

Glad you made it back. I'll definitely fiddle with the room acoustics. I'm probably not in the best room in the house (Living room with double window, and two entrances no doors. hehe. I might have to move all my stuff upstairs to the spare bedroom. And I have no idea what you just said...

    Singing vocals with headphones

Thanks Neil. I have it on as all the time. It doesn't hurt any cuz mic's that don't need it don't get it. I tried the headphone in one ear thing last night. Works much better for singing. Just feels a bit awkward. Songs are coming out smoother. The sound still isn't satisfactory to me...

    n-track with external wave editor

Hey fellas! I'm currently using the trial vers of n-track with an external wave editior (All Editor) for normalizing and effects. Is this necessary or does n-track have the capability already? Also, I'm about 10 days into the 40 day trial period. I'm considering using Cakewalk Home Studio...

    Cakewalk SONAR vs. SP C1

Just picked up a Studio Projects C3 from ebay for $255 brand new. I have a bid in on Cakewalk Home Studio 2002 for like $30. I'm glad you guys are letting me know about mic pres. I figure my $600 mixer's pres would be good enough. I'll have to read up on mic pres now. Sheesh! This is...

    SM58's sounding different

I have a pair of wireless SM58's and one corded SM58. The corded one sounds quite different from the wireless ones. It's a bit more "muffled" for lack of a better term. Does anyone know why this might be? Is it common that the same model mics might sound different?
