    Taking a different step?

Promote to who? The public, or the industry? If it's to the public, the first thing to do is stop calling it a demo. Nobody wants to buy a demo. They want an album. Or an EP. If you don't think what you've got is up to what *you* would consider "album quality", you need to start by getting...

    How to write a bio

I put my limited knowledge to work and wrote this little article on bio writing. Let me know if you find it helpful: http://www.alandmoore.com/ramblings/WriteABio.htm

How Do You Find a Good Band Name?!?!

Best thing to do is get the band together, give everyone a pen and paper, then just start brainstorming. If it starts going off on a joking tangent (and naming a band always does), bring it back to serious and start over. Once you've got 4 or 5 names that are halfway decent, get on the...

Singer/Songwriter and local gigs - where to start?

You don't necessarily have to cultivate a relationship with the club's manager to get a gig, but if you've played an open mic several times at the same place, that'd be a good place to start. I don't know how "christian" you might consider your music (you mentioned playing at church), but in...

Who's trying to make it happen here in Nashville

I'm just curious, I see my fellow Nashvillians popping up here now and then; how many of you are trying to make it (or are making it) in music? Not necessarily as artists, either. I was trying to break into producing and programming here for a while, I still do little gigs here and there, but...

Registering works as PRO writer or self-publisher

Exactly; we set up publishing companies because it was the only way to get some royalties that were due to us after the label we were on folded. I'd suggest checking at ASCAP and BMI's website, or giving them a call to find out why and when it might be appropriate to join a PRO.

    Key of a song?

While pianos are still stretch-tuned (slightly out of tune at the top and bottom of the keyboard), the use of equal temperment (which was not used in the classical period) has made the different keys pretty much the same. So in a sense, if you're talking about WHICH key a song is in, yeah, it's...

Registering works as PRO writer or self-publisher

I'm no expert on how this stuff works, but I am set up as a publisher and writer through ASCAP and it cost me nothing. ASCAP and BMI aren't publishers; they're PRO's. That means they collect royalties for published works and send them to the writer and publisher of the work. Even if you're...

Why Not Start Your own record company?

What I'm saying is, why bother "starting a label"? If you have a CD to sell, sell it. Put it on CDbaby, get it in some local shops, play some shows, put up some flyers, etc. People talk about "starting a label" like it magically does something for you. I suppose if it gives you an extra air...

Why Not Start Your own record company?

A lot of people have opted to start their own labels. But I would put to you, what is the use of starting your own label? What does it really get you apart from some small amount of pretended legitimacy? You still don't have (among other things): 1. conventional distribution 2. What it takes...

Practice. Too Much, Too Little, Too Late

My band used to do about 2-3 practices a week, about 3-4 hours or until the vocalist couldn't sing any more. It's not just about quantity but quality to. Record your practices. Find weak spots. Go over them. Get them right. Keep doing the songs until you get them down right. If the bass...

    Key of a song?

2 things I maintain about music theory: First, it shouldn't be called "music theory". It should be called "music theories", because each genre and style of music develops its own set of properties and defining features. Someone earlier mentioned "classical theory" vs "normal theory"; this is...

Is it cool to sell CD's at shows that I recorded at home?

I didn't mean to imply that your stuff isn't worth selling for more than $5; believe me, there's plenty of stuff out there for $12-$15 that isn't near as good as what you've cobbled together. There's a point of balance between pricing something high enough to give it perceived value, and...

    Help

Unfortunately the world is full of people with great material who are still trying to figure out "where to go from here". At least half of this forum falls into that catagory. Sadly there are no easy answers any more. The questions you should ask yourself are, where do you *want* to take it...

    How to make it happen

I've got friends who make a living doing stuff for music libraries. I've done a few projects with them. It can be fun, but it can be a real drag. I think for a lot of us the ideal job is just sitting in a room making music and being creative and pawning off whatever we make for a nice...

Advice needed (from you experienced muso types)

Sadly, enough, it's good to be cynical these days. Cynicism and realism seem to be blurring together. Check everything out, but trust no one.

New look for my review site

Thanks; the one tweak I had contemplated making was bringing the background up a bit from the color it is now. I designed the page on a monitor that I found out later is significantly brighter than most. It should be a quick fix since I used a style sheet, but I don't know about my graphics, I...
