    triton beats through fruity loops

Just get yourself a decent audio editor and you can sample your keys all you want. I sampled the drumkits off my triton to use in Buzz where I could manipulate them more.

How do I choose a keyboard for a beginner?

At a low budget, your choices are basically to get a consumer board, or a used Pro/semi-pro board. The advantage of a cheap used pro board are gonna be better keyboard action, more flexibility with messing with sounds, and you can probably resell it for about what you paid for it if you don't...

    Overdrive/distorsion effect plug-in. Any?

There's got to be more overdrive plugins available out there than anything else. Many of them free. Take a look at www.kvr-vst.com.

    My guitar sounds suck!

The guy asked about plugins. So we told him about plugins. What's the big deal?

    A MIDI Moron, needing help...

I don't have sonar in front of me, but it should have a setting under the MIDI configuration to set up the master clock. You can set this to external. Check the manual for the details; what you're looking for, though, is setting the MIDI clock to external. I would assume the 8-track would...

new article: writing better vocal harmonies

Different strokes for different folks, I guess. To me it's no different from saying things like "turn up the treble on that track a few dB" or "This part needs more of a single-coil though a 2x12 combo sound" or "try to develop that metaphor a little more in the bridge". For me it's more about...

new article: writing better vocal harmonies

Thanks Aaron; when you talk about examples, do you mean specific songs that use these techniques, or actual spelled out examples (like giving notes). As a side note, does anyone know a good way to incorporate actual music notation into a document? I suppose I could make jpegs with a notation...

    cd covers . . . creating a good one . . . help!!!!

Without seeing your cover art, it's hard to say why people would call it cheap. Where did you get the photo? Was it professional, or did you do it yourself? A lot of subtlety goes into stuff like that. Designing cover art is no different than recording music; any idea can work if it's done...

    New Song

It's hard to tell much from my leeeeeeeeetle pc speakers, but I think I could use some more drums. Way too buried. I like the song, though I haven't the patience to listen to the whole thing. Nice classic rock thing going. Wish I had better speakers to listen on (or broadband at home).

Best way to do Rock drums electonically

Good point; I should probably update the article a bit. Not only soundfonts, but other sample formats allow this kind of setup. Thanks!

Song + Album Stats Question ....

If I'm not mistaken, when you release an album you only get paid for 10 songs when it comes time for royalties. This is why a lot of label releases don't have more songs than this. I could be wrong. And I'm with mawtangent. I don't think a short album is a ripoff; a crappy album is a ripoff.

    Lost dll extension

Try uninstalling and reinstalling cakewalk. Sounds like a file got corrupted. It might be your soundcard drivers. Did you do anything to the computer since it worked last? Install some software, or an update, or a new plugin?

    My guitar sounds suck!

If you've got the wrapper, head on over to www.kvr-vst.com and start downloading freeware fx to your hearts content. Some good tube saturation plugins before the amp sim will help you with sustain. Also, check out the green machine plugins; some good amp sims there, a little different in...

    confused newbie needs help

The M1 may have a few sounds that may be of use to you in those genres (the M1 piano is a staple for classic house music, as I understand), but it's not going to really do the job, especially for really synthy ananlog sounds. There's a lot of great software out there that can help; you might...

    DualDiscs - Solution To Piracy?

I wouldn't hope that CD's won't go away; I'd just hope they figure out a way to ensure respect for copyright and artist/label compensation with digital media before it happens. It's really inevitable. Consumer audio equipment is already moving away from CD audio with mp3 players, surround...

    Watch out Mary Poppins!

My wife and I are recording some lullabyes for fun; this one is "Stay awake" from Mary Poppins. Let me know what you think of the mix/arrangement. http://www.alandmoore.com/lc/StayAwake.mp3 Thanks!

new article: writing better vocal harmonies

Thanks guys; fat satchel, I've had many conversations of that nature working out harmonies with people. I don't see why it's so weird; they're just words, words that stand for concepts that nearly every musician understands. It's just a matter of learning the vocabulary. Anyway, it's not...
