Solo violin / solo viola: help needed

I just want to restate how important it is that the mics are UP above the violin. Violins and violas project upwards, and I've never been in a situation where the sweet spot wasn't a few feet higher in the air than I expected. Then again I've only recorded a viola a few times and never any...

    BOC selling private studio gear?

Wow, Blue oyster cult uses some pretty crappy gear. I figured they would have access to some better stuff given that they are rawk stars and all. I think I even saw an aphex aural exciter in there. :(

    only 2 tracks simultaneous?

Here are some up on ebay. I cant remember what model we used, but I think they are all similar. You should definitely read up on the model before you bid on anything though. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=15199&item=3730281496&rd=1...

    only 2 tracks simultaneous?

There was on older model 16bit fostex recorder that had inputs on all 8 channels. They were expensive when they were new, but you should be able to find one used pretty cheap now. Those things rock. My band recorded a whole album on one back in '99.

C4 example for overheads and dirty cab...

Really nice! But your drummer needs to cool it on the hats. If you can't get him to stop playing those hats so hard then at least point the overheads farther away from them and use a hypercardioid on the snare to minimize bleed; maybe just give him a different set of hats to use altogether. Man...

    I want more power!...brotha

Couple of things to keep in mind: -Doubling the wattage of an amplifier will NOT double the volume. Not even close. Something like 90% of the volume of an amp is being pushed by only the first few watts and it takes a quite a bit more watts to reach a volume level that would be worth purchasing...

Phantom Power for a Studio Projects B1

You hit the nail on the head. The preamp in the 488 is not all that hot, and at the prices you can get a decent pre these days, I wouldn't waste my money on a separate phantom power supply. The least I would spend on a pre is $90 for the m-audio audiobuddy, but if you can afford another $50...

why didnt i think of that

I will never buy an auralex product. What they are doing is not just a rip-off, It's a freaking scam! I bet they don't even manufacture their own fiberglass. They probably just buy owens-corning at wholesale prices and then use migrant mexican labor to wrap them in designer fabric. WTF? I could...

    Yamaha MG16/4

I felt the same way, but just figured it was normal. Then I visited the soundcraft website and I don't think that I will ever look at a yamaha again. the soundcraft website was so much more informative it was ridiculous

Help me with this snare problem

Remo dampening rings are very thick and will dampen a drum quite a bit. There are some other companies making the same sort of rings out there, but much thinner so they don't choke your snare as much. I've never liked the remo rings but with some of the others I've been able to get a decent...

    Incubus Make Yourself Question

Mike uses all kinds of crazy stuff now, but on make yourself it's just a PRS through a mesa boogie. I think for some tracks he may have used a semi-hollowbody PRS because you could see him using one all the time live in those days. I too think SCIENCE was a great album. They were so good back...

    Sytek or Safe Sound

For vocals the sebatron vmp would also be very nice. I'd go with the safe sound or the sytek for drums though.

    AD/DA convertors

Anyone compared the delta 1010 converters to rme or motu. I like my 1010, but I've been thinking about upgrading a few channels to something a little better.

    F/S 2 Shure SM58s and 2 Shure SM57

I just scored a pair of unidyne III sm57s off of ebay for $100. I didn't think ebay was a good place for deals anymore, but then I found these two babies. I hear the old unidyne III sm57s are better than the newer ones. Anyway, this is irrelevant to the original post, but I just thought I'd share.

Did I get the wrong sound card?

You wasted your money on that creative labs soundcard. At least your video games will sound good, that's what the card is designed for anyway. Creative Labs Audigiy= overpriced gaming card that home recordists who don't do their research are tricked into buying. "But the guy at the computer...

    Two Good, One Bad

For the outrageous prices of a neumann mic and genelec monitors you could get something equally as good and still have money for a decent soundcard and pre. I don't like genelecs much, and I'd rather have a soudelux at half the price of a neumann, but if I'm only allowed those three options then...

    guitar and recording

Why does every guitarist with an acoustic electric expect to plug the thing in when they go into a studio? You guys are going to drive me insane! Every freaking time! Time to record some acoustic guitar tracks.... "which amp should I plug it into?" AAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!! I'm going to kill the SOAB...
