Which mic, was planning on Neumann tlm 103 now not so sure...

I've said it many times before: The TLM 103 is a good mic, BUT not for the price it's at. You can buy something simular for much less.

Sennheiser 421 II bass rolloff and placement suggestions for different situations?

In German the S would indeed stand for Speech, or Sprache, in this case. It, indeed is not a bass roll-off, but a filter for handling noise, as it once was a popular mic for reporters etc. I understand a lot of people hotwire it to bypass that switch.

    Shure SM7B - Do I need it?

I would say that if you want to build a serious studio setting, the SM7 is almost mandatory. That said, I haven't got one (yet), either.

    VOCAL mics / DRUM mics

A signal chain is, as the saying goes, like any chain; it's as strong as it's weakest link. I started out with multitrack recorders myself. Early on I invested a €1000 on a expensive Neumann mic, and still my tracks were not satisfactory. This was before internet forums, and it took me a couple...

    Which mic should i buy?

You should be able to get something really nice for around $300, buying used is a good idea too.

    Shure mic repair

Well it's a pretty old mic. But fixing an on/off switch is about 30 minutes work, have it fixed at your local guitar shop.

    Which mic should i buy?

You say your "expectations aren't high", but then again you want a mic that "doesn't suck". People with high expectations buy $5000 dollar Neumann mics. Most of us here can't afford those, we save our pennies for mics "that don't suck". If you want the cheap route get a Somsan CO3, I hear...

Welcome Simon. I've heard many excellent comments on most of those mics. Have fun!

T-Pain... hmm... the name seems appropriate enough, though I wonder what the "T" stands for... Torturous Tonal Terrible Testicular

    Stocking stuffers

How true! A couple of years back I was rehearsing a small acoustic set with some guys and one of them had one. Next week everyone had one.

Bought some used Sennheiser shotgun mics... now what.

Indeed, postage, no tax at all. Many thanks for all that great input on that K3U, I'll run some tests over the weekend, see how I like it. Could you think of a mic you would campare it too? Nobody knows the K6P then? After a quick browse it appears to be more expensive then the K3U.

Bought some used Sennheiser shotgun mics... now what.

I walked into a great deal last weekend; a Sennheiser K3-U with ME80 Hypercardioid capsule + a Sennheiser K6P with (what appears to be a) ME64 Cardioid capsule, together for €100 ($130) + stamps. They're worth around 3x that. But this gear is mainly for going out into the woods and record...

    Drum mics

Again; I would browse around the stickies and get truely informed. If you're on a budget, it's better to buy quality mics second hand, instead of buying cheap stuff that will wear down your enthousiasm. I Learned the hard way; I don't recommend it.
