I've tinkered around with it and found it to be a very fun tool... I can't be helpful on your specific question, but I can tell you it's a fun piece of gear to have.

I know you can use one, check under edit, and preferences, I'm not sure exactly where it is in there.. I would recommend just dropping $130 on an Oxygen 8 though or something like that.

What's your signal chain? Why are you recording in 16 bit and not 24? In 16 you have to record hotter signals to get the most out of the bit depth, in 24 you don't have to push the meters so hard coming in and it can give you a lot of headroom to work with. Looks like you're going to have to...
