    Question for BBB......

Elco, I just did a gig on Saturday for a guy playing a Crate. (I run a sound company in Louisiana) I had a cancellation and got a last minute pickup for a small local band. The guitar player was only like 17. I was already in a bad mood, because I had lost a good paying gig in Florida...

I just have to recommend this!

Tried the POD. It's a good box. I play a Warwick Streamer Stage1 for live shows. I've had much better luck with the Sans Amp Bass Driver. They cost about the same. The Warwick's a four, but I've had similar results with Ken Smith and Stingray 5's. Check it out! Brad

I can't even do the circles right without the singing! Brad

    Saddest show story.

Stewart, You will be surprised with the difference in tone coming through a mic'd stack. You will find that you have to add more midrange to that Marshall than you think to get it to sit properly in the mix. (Depending on the style of music you're playing) If your sound crew is absolutely...

    How clean are your strings?

If you get desperate, you can actually boil your strings. This is really a bass player trick, but it works fairly well for guitar also. Expect to get an extra session or so out of them. Brad

Mackie non pro versus pro pre's

Everybody's a critic ;-) I've never used Mackie in the studio, but I've used them on the road forever. For the money, I never found them to be cheap sounding (I have a little experience, as I run a professional sound reinforcement company that does shows throughout the Gulf Coast) And...

Help me out a little... recording questions!

Good point... actually, almost every device on the market attempts to reproduce the overtone series and tonal characteristics of more desirable amplifiers... with varying degrees of success. The only point I was trying to make is that the tone will be harsh and nasal if you don't use some sort...

    Suggestions for Bass Micing

Gotta agree with Darrin... If you're trying to decide between two options, DI is where you should invest your money. However, I have don't like the POD. For the money, the SansAmp Bass Driver DI is a much better value. We've run a Ken Smith, Streamer Stage-1, and a Stingray in the studio...

Help me out a little... recording questions!

The speakers in your cab are part of your guitar sound. They are different from PA speakers. They do not reproduce the entire sound spectrum. Instead they cut off some of highs. As a result, the sound will not be as harsh. If you run direct, you will have to use some sort of box to try and...

Mackie non pro versus pro pre's

Not enough difference for you to really worry about. People have to apply marketing terms to constant product improvements to increase product appeal... don't run out and buy a new mixer to get "pro" preamps It's always wise to invest in a good quality preamp. Especially with condensors...

dbx166A controls - Is Tom Cram here?

Hi Tom, Could you email me the URL's of those other BBS's. If have tried a number of searches and was only able to find one or two others. BTW... keep up the great work. I have lots of dbx stuff and I get good results from nearly every unit. Brad brad@just-for-musicians.com

    Tube Pre -or- Compressor

Buy a good mic pre before you worry about anythig else. The difference will be like night and day. You may also want to consider trying another mic. I tried the 39 once and wasn't crazy about it. 4033 is better for the same price range (in my opinion). It's strictly cardioid, but that's...

    Suggestions for Bass Micing

Great article. For the cab sound, you may want to experiment with a Beta52, Sennheiser E-602, or Audix D-4. I have had good results with all three, as well as the D-112. I could get more specific, but you didn't mention what type of sound you're looking for. By the way, be honest with...

    preamp hook up

Adam, The short answer to your question is don't worry about the patchbay. If you only have three or four pieces of gear, it's faster to just hook them up directly. The other thing people forget to mention about patchbays is that you end up spending a LOT of money in cables and connectors...

    Bass Drum Mic

If possible, buy a dedicated kick mic. The previous thread has lots of great info. As mentioned everyone will agree there is no *right* pick. Beta52 and E602 are good picks for the ease of use. There seem to be lots of ATM25 fans on this board. I have been displeased with them in the...

    preamp hook up

If you don't need any additional EQ, or outboard gear in the chain you definitely could go direct. If you have a decent mixer, it shouldn't color the sound that much. In that case, the signal chain would be mic-pre-channel-then to the ADAT via an ELCO cable. The important thing is to match...

Mic Shoot-out - Clean Guitar Sound

Hi Bruce, Could you email me those clips? I'm interested to give them a listen. BTW... the results of the 160 and 57 should come as no surprise. When I think of great guitar tone (at least in the rock genre) Eddie Kramer's name is always the first to come to mind. In the studio, he always...
