To warm up a snare... I don't know if you would consider this a trick, so much as a standard... Add a tambourine to the hits you want to accent (usually to add punch to the two and four or their equivilent in the rhythmic structure). This is an old standby and can be heard on lots of tracks...
Nice try Tony :-)
Live sound is a totally different animal than the safe, warm confines of the studio. I’ll let you get away with saying that you can use a cheap mixer for a monitor console. But you also need a split snake to run this setup… and another console… a case for that console…...
Right on Roel!
That's the point I was trying to make! When you were studying electronics, did you ever have one of those circuit books that showed you how to wire a bunch of stuff, but you had to map it out on one of those "prototype" boards? Man, what a pain in the ass!!!
As compared to a...
Thanks for the compliment on the site. I've been working really hard at it... Search Engine positioning is tough stuff :-(
As far as the deal w/5&6's, there are a number of factors. Many people feel that four's are more comfortable. You have to extend the scale to make the B string sound...
Great phasing tip. That definitely falls into the "why the sh*t didn't I think of that" category. Good ideas always seem obvious after you hear them.
Here's a neat trick. You can use it anywhere in a song, but it works best to make a bridge sound more "swelling", before building into the...
Absolutely on the tuning. BTW, Mark, bear in mind that when you're tuning the kick, it will actually tune "backwards". In other words, the pitch will appear to be lower/deeper/boomier when you tighten the heads.
The reason is that the fundamental pitch will be below the range of human hearing...
Dear Ed,
Truer words have never been spoken. Tell me if this sounds familiar:
The more experienced, pro level players compromise on ninety percent of the stuff you mention... the novice players argue as if being stubborn would make me think they're "professional"
How do I make my drums sound...
Hey guys...
You're not alone! I don't own any Earthworks stuff, but I definitely remember the first time I encountered it! I was laying down an acoustic track with a pair of QTC-1's. I couldn't figure out what the loud thumping noise was in the cans... Then I realized it was me rubbing my...
Try delaying the signal and then panning them out a little... creates a nice hole in the center of the mix for the kick-- You can hear that trick used a LOT on R&B tracks.
BTW, as you said, the cab will not reproduce transients accurately. Dat's da whole point! The reason so many people like...
I have a Streamer-Stage 1 that I am very happy with.
There isn't any type of music that "calls" for a 5 or 6. You'll hear them in everything from jazz to country.
For a beginner bass, I wouldn't spend nearly that much money though! If you're dead set on spending that money and you play...
Sound like a great idea. I’m in as long as we can keep the cost under $250 (just components, not tools). I’d hate to get side-tracked with a new project and have a thousand bucks worth of leftovers. Have you found somewhat to host the stuff?
You’re going to need space for pics and...

Some of them are still sitting in a corner of a room. These people are not technically oriented... but they are all incredible musicians... does that mean they shouldn't be recording music? I feel awful, knowing they wasted their money because I though everyone thought like me. They...
A little spirited debate... I like it. I would like to make a few things clear. I never meant that no one in a home studio should use a patch bay... I realize that my choice of wording in my previous post was misleading, and maybe even offensive to some... Sorry.
My point is that I don't...
That's kind of like saying "my biggest problem is not always not always having everything I want"... sort of vague.
Well... I wasn't planning on writing that one, but I aim to please, so here's my top 5 responses:

Neat Zappa trick... I gotta try that. I've also had decent results with a 4033 close mic'd. Remember to engage the pad.

If I try to make it any easier, I'll probably just screw it up. I have two guys that handle my tech stuff for me and I still manage to screw it up just in the implementation :-)
Anyway, I sent the first batch of reports out. Thanks for being patient. Some of them may have screwy margins...
Dolemite- What mic(s) are you using with the VMP-2. We have one here (although it never gets used). It was the first pre-amp in the studio. It was quickly replaced by a TL-Audio 2051, which is a great pre. I would like to use it for something other than a coffee table, but the TL just blows...
Crown PCC-160, EV RE-90B and AT 849 are all good mics.
I would be worried to have anybody notice "Radio Shack" on any gear I use for a corporate gig. If they think they can find the stuff themselves, they may consider your services less valuable... even if the mic sounds just as good ;-)
At...
Don't go out and spend the money on a new mic yet!!!
First try a good pre with that 4033.
If you're doing voiceovers, you'll want to buy one with a good compressor... or buy a seperate compressor. You'll have to get used to the controls a bit, but once you do, that will help "warm up" your...
