I have heard good things about the M-Audio Audiophile 2496. I think it is about $150 for two channels. On the other hand, the Lexicon Core2 seems like a better value, but I’m not a big digital guy. The 4033 is a great mic… very similar to the KSM32. I also like PreSonus for the money...
… A question for the ages.
As you probably know, very few sources will accept unsolicited material.
So what are your options? The same they’ve always been. Tour and network… tour and network. Ask other artists who they have met that could be a possible contact and just follow the...
Turning the mic at an angle is standard practice for cabinet mic’ing technique. Generally the reason this is done is to defect blasts of air as the speaker moves forward.

Check out my response to "Newbie in need". There will be a lot less repeating if yall hop into the same thread, as you seem to be in roughly the same place :-)

How many inputs do you plan to use on drums? This will make a difference as to how many in/outs you will require. Shop for software based on it’s utility and ease of use. Software claiming to be “for guitar” is usually nothing more than a marketing angle that will net you less features for...
Good eye Gidge!
The DPS12i is the newer model. This is the 12 (no i) on closeout special. What’s the difference? The new one has a 10 gig drive and the closeout has a 2 gig. Is that a big deal? For $500 less I don’t think so. Especially when it can be backed up to adat or scsi. The...
Ajay,
Thanks for the compliment. A lot of time has gone into the site. And thanks for mentioning the fee. It is $300 a year, although there are some added benefits besides the ones I mentioned. I’ll leave all the selling bs to their web site.
Remember, the purpose of this whole process is...
If you don’t want to track on PC, but you still want to go digital, you have lots of options open to you. At that price, you could go up to 16 tracks. Besides the Roland stuff, check out the Korg D16 and the D1600 (the latter may be slightly out of your budget). The Akai DPS12i is also a good...
Hey Paul,
Haven't heard from you in awhile. Any luck finding a someone to host this monstrosity? Or have you realized what we're up against ;-)
PS I may be able to help out w/the PCB's if it's an issue.

Mr Q.
Amen. I’m sick of seeing people throw out a few fancy names from articles, a few specs from a book they read and then telling a newbie they need a $2,000 preamp.
I wanted to say that your situation strikes close to home for me. My main gig is live sound. We also have a small but...
Hey guys,
Think about it for a minute. Why would a producer, etc. spend time sifting through unsolicited material, when they have music coming in every day with the endorsement of someone who has already reviewed it. ANSWER: They don’t.
The few success stories from services like these are...
Running direct will sound brittle unless you have cabinet emulation built in. Guitar speakers, unlike PA speakers cut the high raspy end of the guitar signal. Without an circuitry to mimic this effect the sound will be too bright. *All emulation circuitry is not created equal*
On the other...
Depends on the kit and the style of drummer. Here are a few tips. Try both the Beta and the SM57. Listen to the interaction between the snare and the hat. If you can’t find a location where you have enough off-axis rejection to lower the apparent volume of the hat, you will end up not using...
If you already have a functional studio, I think it’s alright advice to suggest someone save up enough money to get past the “barely adequate” mark. If you’re just getting started, my advice is: Buy whatever you can afford!!!
You can always sell it on ebay later. The experience you will...
The label may take all the pure economic risk, but time is money and those guys are out there working their asses off for $20 a day.
PS. I’ve seen the article at Mercenary, but it’s illegal and unethical to cut and paste something like that (IMO). I need to get in touch w/someone who can give...
Thanks Taylor… I’ve been going at it pretty hard in my spare time. If you have any advice, or would like to see something up there, please let me know… brad@just-for-musicians.com
BTW, I really want to post Steve Albini’s famous article up there. It’s one of my favorites. Does anyone know...
Hi Harvey,
I’ve been watching your threads in silent admiration for awhile. Very few of the older “been there done that” guys exhibit the patience and insight that I find in your threads. Many don’t realize that cost really is a factor (because they’re not used to thinking that way). I see...
Don't want to mislead... When I rated the Project 8 lower than the others, it was because parts may be hard to find if they are really phasing the console out.
I agree with Don on the bad marketing. If you can find one for $1200 as he suggests, that really would be a good deal.

You, my friend, are a wise man :-)
BTW Billy Crystal was great in that movie... I laughed my ass off!!!

Hey, check this out. A little bit older, but this console blows those two out of the water, and no one seems to have noticed it yet (on ebay).
