Do you believe that there are rules to good melody writing?

Sorry, that's really not true. It wasn't until much later that Paul started doing a few of his own drum parts. With the exception of one of the versions of Love Me Do (album version or single, I forget which), which Andy White played drums on, it was all Ringo. It wasn't until much later...

Help me find this song's key

Hmm, I think I'm leaning towards D. Judging by all those Cs in there (The C, F, and Am chords), you're largely sticking to D Mixolydian as opposed to D Major. Which is cool. Many many rock & pop songs use a lot of the ol' flat 7th. Also, that F# chord I think suggests it's in D. You're more...

Do you believe that there are rules to good melody writing?

Actually, it wasn't the image, I believe. They became dissatisfied with Pete, he became unreliable, and I think they were also dissatisfied with his playing. Also, if there's one thing I'll never understand is why Ringo gets slated. Ringo was a good drummer! He was innovative, distinctive...

    VS-2480CD or VS-2400CD

I use a VS-2480CD. I think it's great. 24 tracks @ 24 bit, the effects are very good (and there's a lot of them - 36 algorithms, 250 preset patches). Editing is good (it has a waveform display, though not a scrolling one), and VGA monitor display is an excellent feature. The latest software...

Warming Digital Tracks - Most Effective?

I've got a VS2480 too, and I'm pretty darn happy with the sound too. But, surely, before you go buying expensive clocks, you wanna be sure that the clock in the 2480 actually represents a significant weak link? I don't really know anything about the quality of clocks, and I don't know how good...

Do you reckon the clock in the 2480 is audibly in need of upgrade?

What Key Am I Playing In????

lol! Well, I guess you're right... But, if you had been just talking about standards, originally, I probably wouldn't have disagreed with you. I'm not surprised at how many of those standards do end on the root. I guess when I said that your claim was exaggerated, I was thinking about the...

What Key Am I Playing In????

Well I do play a lot of Jazz. I'll tell you what, I'm listening to Joni Mitchell at work today, and I'll do a little survey of how many songs end on the root. Maybe I'll do the same with some more songs when I get home...

What Key Am I Playing In????

I don't think it's really accurate to say most songs have the melody end on the key note. It's probably more accurate to say most songs will end on the root, 3rd or 5th.

Do you believe that there are rules to good melody writing?

glynb - I'm sure people do that. I wouldn't go so far as to say that everyone is subconsciously following rules. But I do know that truly inspired creativity transcends that. However, even if what you say is true - it's all in the head of the musician. If the musician is doing what you say...

Ah, but Elvis didn't actually write the songs now, did he? :D The Beatles would have been a better example ;)

Do you believe that there are rules to good melody writing?

Well, I wouldn't call it rules. You said "Even birdsong follows some 'rules' in that phrases get repeated deliberately - it is not just random tweats!" Yes - but structure, is not the same thing as rules, IMO! Rules represent restrictions. Structure is just that - structure.

Do you believe that there are rules to good melody writing?

No there aren't. The music precedes the theory - not the other way round. By talking about styles of music, we're just doing an intellectual dance around it. It allows us to communicate with each other. But there are no rules!
