How to add a nice UMph to my toms?

Might not sound like Metallica, but you can still get it to sound good to your ears. Compression and eq are your friends here, but first try new heads and/or tuning the drums so they record well (which is not necessarily tuning them so they sound great live).

snare mics other than a 57

And why not list your favorite recording chains for snare while you're at it. I had a nice session the other night recording an old wooden Premier (I think), with an atm23 going through a Toft atc-2, no eq or compression needed.

snare mics other than a 57

Just curious what everyone uses aside from an sm57 on the snare. After playing around with placement, I realized that I like my beyer m69 tons better than a 57, in almost any circumstance. A friend uses an atm23 on snare, and he always gets incredible snare sounds.

    TC M300 of Lexicon MX200

I've got the m300, and can compare it to both the mpx110 and the microverb (but not the lexi 200). To me, the m300 is very easy to use, and the reverbs are much more real sounding than the lexicon I have, which can be either good or not to good. I like the m300 to give some drums or clean...

    Vocal mic with mid boost?

An at4033 can be very up front, though I'm thinking it's probably more pronounced in the high mids than where you'd want it to be.

    Audix D6 Placement?

I guess I meant in comparison to something like a 421, which isn't so scooped in the mids. The D6 is a great kick mic, for sure.

    best results

Did a drum session in my small room last night, and we used a single at4047 in that same spot, along w/ a d6 on the kick, atm23 on the snare, and a tape op ribbon out in front.

    Audix D6 Placement?

    D112, maybe?

    Audix D6 Placement?

Just got mine yesterday, and had a drummer friend come over and we used last night. Same placement worked really well for me. It's not the most natural kick sound, but mixes well and gets some serious low end.

    ADK-A51s

I've used the ADK v51-s series IV quite a bit. From what I understand (reading the forums at the ADK website), the series to avoid is VI - something about a problem with self noise, I think. The "s" means that the mic could withstand higher spl levels, and the only time I had a problem with...

    Ringing in snare

Wow - don't think I've checked this thread since last June. I ended up using moongel, tuned it differently, AND played w/ mic placement (and mic selection). Still not great, but much closer to how I want the recorded snare to sound. Thanks for the input, everyone.

I need help recording at even levels

Are you compressing the lead tracks at all? That might be a huge help.

    Recording drums with minimal mics.

I don't know - there's some great examples of mono drums out there. Aren't the drums in Lady Madonna mono?

    best kick drum mic?

I just did some tracking with a 421 inside the kick and a 4050 out front, which was really nice and natural sounding. My d6 arrives on Thursday, so I'm pretty stoked to give that a try, but for the time being I like the classic sound of the 421 inside the kick.

    Recording drums with minimal mics.

I think you can get a good sound from what you have. If your drummer can play evenly, tune the kit well, and - most importantly - play the kit the way you'd like it to be mixed in the song (i.e., don't hit the cymbals so hard), even a single mic well placed can render a great sound. Do a...

Another mic poll, but a nice one

Of those mics, I've used everything but the CAD, and liked all of them for one purpose or another. Out of the bunch, I think the 4033 would be the best choice. It's not entirely neutral, but does the job on nearly anything, whereas the Rode can be hit or miss.

Mics that generally play nice with modeling plugins?

I've got the Antares plugin, and sometimes I'll use it if I chose a mic that ended up being completely wrong for a certain application. The other day, I used a 4033 as a front of kit mic and it was picking up some nasty hi hats, so I used the plug and ended up selecting a Royer for that...

Compressor for recording bass guitar for $200 or less?

Let me throw in another vote for the dbx 163. I've got the 164, which is the stereo version of the 163. It is just the right thing for bass in a lot of different applications, and even finds its way as a drum overhead comp from time to time. The RNC is great for many things, but I'd say bass...

Toft Audio ATC-2 vs. Joe Meek TwinQ

I agree - Fletcher's statements have been taken out of context. Like I say, the Toft pre's sound a lot like the syteks I've heard - and that is a good thing! They are clean, somewhat up front, and never too exaggerated.

Audio Technica 3035 or Studio Projects B1

I've owned the 3035 and used the B1 - they're definitely different flavors. For vocals, I'd probably go with the 3035 - there'll be less to eq out.
