    miking toms...

Though I personally haven't used them as such, some people I trust really like Oktava mk012's on toms.

    Decent sounding guitar for recording

For a little more, you might find a Fender Nashville telecaster on the 'bay, and that's a helluva studio guitar if it's set up properly. Really versatile - I love mine, especially after replacing the middle pickup with a SD 59er minihumbucker. And for a retro thing, those really cheap Danelectro...

    SM57 or MD421

Yep, can't go wrong with either on a Marshall, though I think a 421 can be much better on other stuff where a 57 might be lacking, i.e., some kick drums, bass cabs, vocals...so you pay extra for the 421, but you can probably stretch how you use it a bit further, too. FWIW, I like the e609 quite...

    Beyer Dynamic m69

I'm surprised more people don't talk about the m69's - I LOVE it on clean-ish guitar cabs. Great mic, if for no other reason than that.

Chameleon Labs 7602 - Initial Impression

I've had one of these for about two months now, and it really is a very cool piece. I use it primarily for electric guitars and bass, and I'm sure it'll be on kick when I do some drums soon. The eq is really powerful, as in a little goes a long way...a totally different beast than the Toft eq...

compression on kick snare/ or overheads

Great Frusciante quote in your signature line. I LOVE that album. Some gentle comp on the kick and snare can help tame the peaks and avoid digital distortion (though you may want those peaks, since that's really why you're close mic'ing them anyway). If anything, compress lightly on the way...

    Double Mic'ing Guitar Cab w/ SM57 & e609??

You might wanna place both mics on the same speaker, getting the capsules as close to each other as possible (and equidistant to the speaker). This has helped me phase align each other later on. As for the mic choices - I used both of those on some scratch demo stuff I was playing, and found...

    Mics to swap

I've got an ADK Hamburg I don't really use that much, although it's a good mic. Would you be interested in working something out for the HHb?

    Wow.......

I've read somewhere - I think the ADK forums - that the sc1 uses the same shell as the others but the innards are slightly different. I don't know how true this is...I guess the real test would be for someone to use some or all of them and compare how they sound. Either/or...I like how my sc1's...

    Audix D6 kick mic

I agree with the above post - placement with the D6 is easy as pie. I also found that it works exceptionally well on a bass cab. I used it on my SWR 15" cab through an old Altec, with just a little bit of compression but no need for eq.

    WHAT to buy? v67g v 990

Personally, I'd go for the v67. I've had both and found the 990 to be lacking on everything, while the v67, colored as it is, still seems to be a good mic for the price.

Best Mic Pre Quality for the $$?

I have a friend who recorded an album with the Aphex as his best pre's - and it came out pretty good. You see them pop up in larger studios, which should say something about their utility.

Tracking drums with the mics we have...

I like the idea of using the EV coupled with the subkick thingies - you'll be able to blend the attack from the EV with the low end from the others. Try the NT1's as overheads and if you can eq out some of the high end, they might be fine.

What are the most essential pieces in you rack?

I find I'm absolutely loving my UAD card lately - especially the EMT plate - but for rack gear, I've been using an Altec 1589 for lots of stuff lately. Not an expensive piece, but funky in just the right way for crunchy electric guitars.

    For Trade: Toft ATC-2

I've got a mint Toft ATC-2 (well, maybe a little bit of rack rash, but that's all), and I'm interested in trading it. I love the Toft - amazing eq and a really cool compressor, but I'm finding I do more eq and compression with my UAD card than I do outboard. Ideally, I'm looking for a Peavey...

    Tube Pres

At first, I was convinced that I NEEDED a tube pre to warm up my signal chain, and went through the usual suspects of entry level, starved plate tube preamps thinking I'd find something that sounded warm, fat, etc, etc, etc. If you want warmth, go for something old that is transistor based. An...

    recording bass?

Another vote for dual mode. Just recorded a P-Bass through an SWR workingman's 15, using the direct out on the SWR through a Toft with some mids pushed blended with an Audix D6 on th cab through an old Altec. Pretty killer bass sound if I do say so myself.

    Recording bass

Can you record two tracks simultaneously - the direct track and the bass cab with a mic on it? It's always helpful for me to have the two and blend them as I need to.
