Yep, I agree with the single overhead up above the drummer, looking at the snare. You probably won't have the depth you might get from a front-of-kit mic, but you will get better snare definition.
Well, you could point one side of the fig8 like you normally would (at the 12th fret or so), and let the back side pick up some room. I like this more than omni on acoustic guitars, unless I'm needing to get super close in.
Occasionally, I do like the sound of an acoustic recorded fig8 with the...
As for muddy mixes...are you doing eq adjustments in solo, or in the context of the whole mix? That can make a pretty significant difference, as can some healthy HP cuts on the elements that are not really critical to the mix's low end (i.e., guitars, vocals, keys).
As for guitar...can you put...
I think the Altec stuff I've been around has been great, but it's all shared one major issue - noise. I currently own a 1592b and 1589b, and it'd take quite a bit to pry those away from me, but I wish they were quieter so I could use them on more sources. That said, on louder sources, they...
I've got an at4050 (with a slight ding on the back screen...nothing major), and while I think it's a great mic, I find myself needing something a bit more colored more often (since I also have a c414 that does the transparent thing well enough). Anyone interested in trading straight up for a...
Don't sweat the reflections issue - condensor mics can get nice and tight on a sound source easily, especially if there's a pad to use. I've found the at4033 to be fairly versatile and not too pricey - an at4050 would be a step up, but also cost more. MXL v67's can be cool on some vocals, and...
Budget? ATM-25...seems like these go for less than the other mics mentioned on ebay, and are very good on kick. A sennheiser md421 or beyer m88 would also be good options, since you can use them on many sources, including kick.
An AT4033 can be really nice by itself on an acoustic, as can an ADK Hamburg. The oktavas are great for stereo. What about a pair of those shiny box ribbon mics?
I haven't used the m37, v76 or the Vienna, but I've used or been around others using the rest. I really like the Hamburg and M9, but they are different animals. The Hamburg can be a bit scooped - which is good or bad, depending. The M9 has some presence to it, but it's also got a warm low-mid...
Well, it is true for some tube mics, but for others the heat generated and/or capsule design is not a threat to the mic's proper functioning.
I like 'em upside down because they look cooler that way.
This is limited to mics I've either used or been around while being used...
Used: AKG c414 - the old ones occasionally come up around 5 bills
New: at4047, at4050, ADK Hamburg - I'll take those over the Baby Bottle anyday, which is a fine mic but (to me) a bit too imposing.
The v67 works really well (in my experience) on baritone voices. For the money, it's a superb mic. I think the Hamburg is a wonderful mic, and while I haven't used a Vienna, I have heard others compare them to c414's somewhat - and my 414B-ULS would be a good fit for higher pitched vocalists...
I haven't used the c3000, but I used to have a pair of c1000's and thought they really were ok for fingerpicked acoustic guitar and on the occasional guitar amp. Yep, they're bright, no doubt about it, but I think they are generally a better mic than many make them out to be. And from my...
