Have a question concerning ribbon mics y'all

I'm interested in experimenting with ribbom mics, probably 48v phantom power type. Since I have to record 5-7 feet out from 7' Steinway B in my living room, I'm concerned about noise (hiss). In most of the ribbon spec, ribbons seem to have a higher noise floor. I've been experimenting with...

    Piano Mic Help!

Hi I started studying home recording about three months ago. I also want to record myself at home, on my Steinway B. Everything hinges on how good a recording you want to make and how far you are willing to go. There are many knowledgable and helpful peolple on this site, but probably one of...

Very basic question on powering ribbon mics----?

OK, looks like I'll be picking up Sonotronics Apollo which takes 48v phantom power like the condenser mics I'm used to using. So I won't be ordering the ribbons with transformers. Hard to understand stuff without having hands on experience.

Very basic question on powering ribbon mics----?

Ok, so you mean they respond to sound all the time? If no switches, how are they turned on and off (I'm not familiar with dynamic mics, have only used condensers so far---)

    Peluso CEMC6 vs. Oktavamod M012?

Thanks. I'll be anxious to here how my mics sound with the Apogee vs. the microtrack preamps. Can't be anything but better I would imagine. I'm sure I'll like any type of improvement. My ear of course is not as fine tuned to differences as say an audio engineer or any version thereof. Just...

Very basic question on powering ribbon mics----?

I'm sure this an easy one for most of you recording folks. I'm considering trying out a pair of ribbon mics for my home recioding of acoustic piano. I'm interested in, for one, a sonotronics Apollo which requires 48v phantom power, or the Cascade X-15 possibly which operates on a transformer...

    Peluso CEMC6 vs. Oktavamod M012?

Thanks Marik. I think I'll get the Apogee. Would that be the Mini -DAC, the Mini me MP and the Mini me DAC seem to be dicontinued although I did see a Mini Me and Mini Me MP with jacked up price. ---($1100) The NT1A's actually sound pretty great and no detectable noise even with the microtrack...

Could anyone tell me if Blumlien, like MS, recording needs to be decoded

There seems to be a controversy online about this . Some say yes some say no. There is even a Cascade X-15 stereo ribbon mic where the specs say it is configured for Blumlien recording, however the ribbon mics are stacked one on top of the other. My understanding is that Blumlien is 90 degree...

    preamp with MS decoder?

Can anyone recommend a preamp for under $1000 that has built in MS decoder. The recording situation is recording classical piano solos on a 7' Steinway B in my home. Thanks in advance.

    Peluso CEMC6 vs. Oktavamod M012?

If I decide to go with MS probably not (due to being "tech challenged," and a bit overwhelmed by the process in general), I'll go with the C4's as the "M". However I am considering holding on to the Microtrack as you suggested and looking into preamps instead of an expensive field recorder. Can...

Does anyone have any recommendations for a stereo pair of medium diaphram mics

thanks for the info. Someone led me to Marik who specifically knows recording pianos, classical music, knows microphones, an accomplished calssical pianist himself, etc. A really great resource for getting a decent recording within some of the limits that I have Yeah, I'll have to keep...

    Peluso CEMC6 vs. Oktavamod M012?

Ok. I'll keep experimenting with the Pulsars and NT1A. I actually was excited when I played back the recording with NT1A's. It did reduce the shrillness of the upper registers a had a beautiful sound. Only thing is that from a distance, the bass didn't seem to have quite enough definition. Since...

    Peluso CEMC6 vs. Oktavamod M012?

Hello Marik, Thanks SO MUCH for the info! it's been hard to get feedback and pin it down to my particular circumstances. So I guess I should look into a good but affordable ribbon figure 8 as the "S." And for the "M" I could try out the NT1A or the Pulsar that I have. However it seems like...

Does anyone have any recommendations for a stereo pair of medium diaphram mics

think I've ruled out omnis because of the space I'm recording in. my microtrack has to be sent back for repair so I have nothing to work with until I get my new recorder in a few weeks. The microtrack I'm selling to a piano student of mine who wants to buy it--when i get it back from m-audio. I...
