    Recap cost

Why? Aside from all the wonderful p*rn on the Internet, there's a lot of armchair gurus who insist 'recapping' an amp or whatever will be a panacea for bad tone from your gear. Assuming the tone is bad to begin with. And assuming the caps are bad. Figure the shop rate (anywhere from...

    Electro-Voice Kick Dum Mic?

I'd try it. You won't spend much of your own money, and you just never know until you try it with the rest of your gear. Unless you want exactly the same kick sound for every one of your songs, you should have more than one kick mic anyway. Add a home-made subkick, and away you go with a myriad...

Rogue Distortion Pedal - Stupid Deal of the Day $29

I think it looks suspiciously like the Mod Tone series. I have a handful of the Mod Tone stuff, and they are actually quite good. But I paid more than $30 for them. That's a deal, and even just for recording I always have a Tupperware tub full of overdrives and distortions. 'Cause even a bad...

    Humbucker newbie question

First off, the pole spacing may be real close, but not exact. Or, it may not be close enough. You have to measure everything first. Bridge humbuckers have their pole spacing slightly wider than neck pickups. If it all seems good to go; SAFE HUMBUCKER COVER REMOVAL - YouTube Good luck.

    cymbals AHHH!!!

Maybe we're different here in Canada, but I absolutely don't know about B8 Plus. The B8 Pro is the B8 with some lathing. Not a lot, but a select amount. And maybe that's why I don't like them. Maybe you should have lathing or don't bother faking a little. But B8 Plus? Don't know those at all...

    cymbals AHHH!!!

There's always exceptions, if you waste enough time trying everything. I've had some Meinl 'stamped sheet metal' cymbals, and they were actually fine. These were really old, though, and not the new stuff. The hi-hats were very decent, and a 16" crash sounded surprisingly good. The hats looked...

Do you know the difference bwteen coil splitting and coil tapping? I didn't

There aren't many coil tapping pickups around, but in a nutshell (well, the only explanation) is you can have a single coil pickup with 6,000 turns, and the manufacturer brings out a tap at 5,000 turns (or whatever). So you can have the full output, or maybe 75% (or whatever). With a humbucker...

Thin guitar sound! please please help!

You're going to have to spend some money. Try an SM57 on the grille and an LDC way back in the room. Blend the two as it suits your tastes. A nifty trick in a DAW is to shift the 'time' of the LDC up just a couple of milliseconds or so (again; use your ears to judge), and EQ it differently...

    P90 problems....

You wired them 'wrong', that's all. Put the meter on two of the three potentiometer terminals, and rotate the pot from 0-10. The meter should show '0' to '250K'. My guess is your ground is wrong, but start here. How to test a potentiometer - YouTube

Dual-Switch Foot Pedal, Technical wiring help!

Yes. You already know the tip is bypass, and the ring is tap tempo. So an ohmmeter will confirm that the switches are wired properly. But basically, you can't go wrong. If you get the ring and the tip mixed up, you can redo it, or just relabel your switches. Then you run the one cable over to...

    Amp Builders?

I doubt it's got three EL84's. Likely two EL84's and one 6AU6, which is lots of gain. Or at least that's what little I know about Hammond. It could be stereo, and have four EL84's, but three? That's too bizarre, even for me. Sometimes I just leave well enough alone, and add a 1/4" input. Find...

Dual-Switch Foot Pedal, Technical wiring help!

I'm not sure of your vernacular, but it just sounds like you need a stereo cable, coming from your Alesis, going into a stereo female jack on your pedal, and each section (tip/ring) goes to a momentary switch. I'll assume normally open. You should be able to do this easy enough, with maybe a...

    Grrrrrrrrrrrrr

Then you are in Europe somewhere. In North America, it would be at least a 4A fuse, and some heads I have seen show 5A. My guess is that with a 220VAC primary, the 2A fuse now seems right. Maybe try a 'slo blo' type. But I'd still triple check the bias, and each tube. This has happened to me...

    Grrrrrrrrrrrrr

Depending on how good your tech is, it is likely a tube and/or bias issue. It's tough finding four EL34's that bias up identically, especially with the Russian 'stuff' these days. And many 'cowboys' like to bias hot, since it does sound great. However, if you have flaky Russian tubes biased hot...

    What is a Harmonica Microphone?

I could be wrong, but I thought they were originally cab microphones? It was Shure's 'Controlled Reluctance Transducer', that would withstand extreme temperature and climate conditions. I knew it had a foil diaphragm, and rather than a moving coil (the old 'speaker in reverse' explanation), the...

    Ibanez guitars - ultimate suckage

Oi vey. My point was that these players can have any guitar they want, probably have companies lined up trying to get them to endorse 'Brand X', and many are very good guitar players. Yet some of these players pick Ibanez. Beats the Hell out of me why. But you see the whole enchilada; Rich...

    Ibanez guitars - ultimate suckage

I almost said I have never owned an Ibanez, but I remembered owning a 335 clone years ago. That was a fine guitar. I haven't bought a 'new' guitar in 20+ years, so maybe I shouldn't defend Ibanez. I've played quite a few, and many basses, but 'owning' any? I shouldn't have been such a...

    Ibanez guitars - ultimate suckage

A true craftsman does not blame his tools. Granted, some real budget guitars aren't very playable, or inspiring to play, but most guitars with enough work can be quite usable. The question is if that particular guitar is worth the time effort to make it playable to you. Do you think the original...

    Ibanez guitars - ultimate suckage

all Ibanez guitars 'suck' like all blonds are dumb and all Irish are drunks. You don't need a flame suit; you need guitar lessons and a good guitar tech.

    Afraid of getting hosed

It won't be a popular answer, but I still use my 2-input Fast Track interface, but use a little mixer to sub-mix down to 2 outputs. I can have as many mics on my drums, but I do have to settle for a good stereo mix to my computer. Life is full of sacrifices.
