    Fender Super Reverb reissue

I'm sure we've all been-there-done-that, but it could literally be anything, so a thorough investigation is necessary. It'll make it a Zen experience, and you'll learn your amplifier inside and out. It could be a loose mounting screw, a loose piece of hardware, or even a tube shield or...

using tablet PC with USB mic

I would use something like a Zoom H4 for around what a decent tablet costs. You could probably find a used H2 for peanuts. I have a tablet, and they're great for road trips, and if your hotel room has Wi-Fi (and most do) you can catch up on 'stuff'. But I never thought to record on it. Hmmm, I...

HELP BUZZ/NOISE When I Plug In

Replace the jack and redo the output wiring. What else you could do, although not 100% necessary, is remove the pots and jack, and add a shield. This can be a very thin (maybe .0015") piece of anything conductive. Even a piece of shim stock would work well. Or, put some shielding tape (always...

using tablet PC with USB mic

Unless I am mistaken, Garage Band is Mac, and unlikely to work on most tablets. Mac does have a tablet kicking around, but I haven't actually seen a Modbook. Now PC tablets usually lack RAM and use SD cards to up the storage capacity. So my best guess is that you would be very crippled using a...

    Intonation issue

This happens a lot if your G is a really thin gauge. Teles are even worse, since you have to compromise for the G and the D string on the same saddle. But a tune-o-matic you can reverse the one G saddle. You might still have to beef up the gauge to get in tune even closer.

    capacitor question

If 1000pF is too piercing, try 2200pF, and let more mids and upper bass frequencies through. But make sure you got the value right first. You may have it too small as opposed to the original to begin with. If physical size is an issue, measure the B+ in your power supply, and see if you can get...

    2.8 millon - for a guitar?

When you look at all the uncertainties in the financial industry, the one investment that will never lose money is the vintage guitar scam. What recession?

    Gibson Pickups

That would sure be a lot better than just a simple graph called 'comparative' output. They also don't take into account ceramic vs. Alnico, or even Alnico II or Alnico V. I guess even Gibson makes mistakes. But another slightly off-topic opinion; we should stop treating this like a...

I need some advice on getting into DIY projects

I started with Craig Anterton's guitar Player articles back in the late 80's, then bought the 1st edition book. Wow. That was 1992 as I look inside the cover. Yes, they're IC based, but still useful and fun to build. You won't get circuit theory with any BYOC kit, but if you build a fuzz, as one...

no reviews on the zoom r16?

My bad; the R24 has the drums. I guess I should look closer before I say something, but we've recorded on it maybe a dozen times. Everything else I stand by; it sounds fine, and not that different (if at all) from my HD16CD. But we did fill SD cards very easy. We tried recording a live show off...

I need some advice on getting into DIY projects

Try a simple BYOC kit. If that works, try a more complicated one. Then go on to a simple Fender mod kit from someone like London Power. Again, when that seems fine, go to a more complicated kit. You'll get your chops up in a hurry.

no reviews on the zoom r16?

I have the predecessor; the HD16CD, and I like it. My friend has the R16, and it works fine. Anything we've recorded together on either of our Zoom recorders sounds similar and sounds more than good enough for demo work or a promo pack. However, having said that, depending on your own...

    Gibson Pickups

I don't use a lot of humbuckers, but know these a little. I like the '57 Classic; an Alnico II magnet for a littler less output, but smoother sounding overall. The 498T is an Alnico V, so there's a little more output, and it's a hotter wind, so it's output goes up again. The others are hot...

    Jim Marshall

There's 'classic' setups, and I thought about how and why. If you read about the development of the EL34, it's an interesting story, in a nerdy way. But the bottom line was they put the Control Grid closer to the Cathode, so it took less of a preamp signal to get full output wattage. With the...

    SM57 transformer removal HELP

The mod is more for the new 57's that seem to have a midrange bump. I have a handful of both USA and Mexico 57's, and some Unidyne III 57's, and the new 'Hencho en Mexico' ones do have a midrange bump, that is by my guess from the transformer and not the 'sloppy dies' as rumored on the...

    SM57 transformer removal HELP

The heat gun will work better, but whatever you do, don't damage the transformer. Yes, save it. Because in a few days from now you'll be putting it back.

    Jim Marshall

And my blonde '62 Bassman, for whatever reason, has fooled many gear heads into thinking I recorded a Plexi. I get asked what pedal I'm using, too. It's a stock head and cabinet. And going back earlier, I've heard many tweed Deluxe amps sound like a Marshall. But still, when you say 'sounds like...

Advice on Zoom R16 before I buy

Just an off the wall idea; someone is likely trying to unload the predecessor to the R16; the HD16-CD for peanuts. You get an 80G hard drive as opposed to a stock 1G SD card. Yes, you can get a much bigger SD card, but from experience, those cards fill up fast. The HD16 is bigger, but I believe...
