Why are tube amps so expensive?

I've had a few Russian 12AX7's that somehow had a cathode-heater short, and would hum like mad. I don't know how these slip by QC, but they do. In fact, other than a filter going 'open' (not likely, but it can happen), tubes are the culprit 99% of the time. The zener bit isn't something I'd know...

    Audio interface; which one?

My best guess is that they'll be pretty much the same. I use the M-Audio Fast Track Pro, but only because in my twisted logic, I need analog inserts or an 'FX Loop'. I also have the Tascam US122, again, simply because it has inserts. They sound remarkably similar, although they are 'installed'...

Upgrading or Hot-Roding Cheap Drum Sets- Please Contribute

I never heard of this before, either, until I tried recording these old Japanese drums. You would hear a 'squeak' as you hit a drum. The engineer took all the lugs off, and wrapped the spring inside with a few turns of a light gauze. Years later, when I knew I had 'import' lugs on some Ludwig...

    Word to the wise II

For the math people; Did you hear about the constipated mathematician? He worked it out with a pencil! :p For the engineers; An optimist sees the glass as being 1/2 full, the pessimist sees the glass as being 1/2 empty, and the engineer only knows that the glass is twice as big as it needs to...

Why are tube amps so expensive?

As was said waaaaaaaaay back; tube amps are expensive because all of us suckers will pay it. It ain't the transformers; why is Mark Bass shit so expensive with switch-mode power supplies and no transformers? Also, look at the price difference between say a 50-watt amp and a 100-watt amp; a lot...

Upgrading or Hot-Roding Cheap Drum Sets- Please Contribute

I used to do this all the time when I was buying the old 60's Japanese kits around town for as cheap as $50 and never more than $200. And that was if it came with hardware and cymbals. I would recut bearing edges, pack the lugs, and put good heads on. They sounded great. However, I gave up on...

Trouble Recording Fender Hot Rod Deluxe 2x12 Combo

That's it in a few sentences. The quest you are on has been the Holy Grail for guitar players the last 912 years. There is no one correct answer, but many options. Lowering the overdrive is absolutely the right idea; usually high gain 'Boogie' type (all in the preamp) settings are thinner. But...

SD Neck 59 in bridge position?

..... I may be wrong, but the string spacing is often just slightly narrower for a neck pickup. So you'll lose a little there as well. Seymour doesn't give out measurements, but 52mm is common for a bridge pickup, and 50mm for a neck pickup. Not a huge difference, but something to think about.

Speaker cab with a volume knob

I am not versed in anything, but a vast magazine collection of various subjects going back to the 70's keeps me entertained. Usually I just get into the advertising, so the super technical nuts-and-bolts trivia often escapes me. This is not a 351C in the Italian sports car I mention, but a...

Speaker cab with a volume knob

I haven't tried an isolation box yet, but I can't see why it wouldn't work well. You get the speaker moving some air, and keep the outside volume down. You won't get the room sound, and I always like a ribbon way back to get the room, but it might just be the best compromise. And OT, but...

Question about Tele 3 saddle brige

Just a guess, but any #8 x 32 thread bolt should work. I may be off on the specs, but it's cheap enough to try a few different ones. Try 1.5" or so.

    Memory Upgrades

Bummer. MCE is awful, and from my own experience, maybe .0001% of any recording gear works on MCE. You can try PC6400, which is purported to be a doable swap for faster speed, and possibly run a bit cooler at the slower clockspeed due to higher quality etching and/or larger chip die sizes for...

    Pulsing Amp Noise

I could be wrong (and I often am), but I'll guess that the input to the Special is left 'open' when using the Vypyr. You may have to redesign your A/B box with at least a DPDT footswitch. I don't know your A/B box, but if it is just a SPDT with no LED's, use a DPDT and have the other input...

Speaker cab with a volume knob

It means since day two people have tried to 'cheat' physics, in all areas of life. It's like inventing a perpetual motion machine. Granted, Volkswagen brought out their forced induction V6, which does match up torque and HP with an 8-cylinder relying on intake produced strictly by atmospheric...

Speaker cab with a volume knob

This has been the Holy Grail for 912 years. How do you make your amplifier sound like 'that' but at a lower volume? You can't. If you have a hankering for chasing your own tail, spend the rest of your life doing just that, but you'll never catch up to it. Sorry. However, the chase sure is fun...

What would you do with this acoustic guitar recording?

I like it. I really do. It sounds great, nice playing, and surprisingly few spots of finger noise. Well, at least compared to when I try to record an acoustic guitar. I would have said add some compression, but if you have, maybe I'd compress it more. A weird thing I do, especially if my...

    Tweed Champ clone - problem

You aren't tightening up the bottom so much as trying to eliminate blocking distortion. Blocking Distortion. And that's what it kinda sorta sounds like, on my actually half-decent computer speakers.

Is it possible to get that EVH sound with JUST 2 SM57's like the rumor?

I never did understand why people obsess over the Van Halen sound on the first record. But, over the years I put on my best Magnum PI mustache and actually helped a few people coming stupidly close. It's a huge jigsaw puzzle, and if one piece is 'missing', well you know the rest. Here are my...
