    Going Old School

Digital Audio Tape (DAT or R-DAT) is a signal recording and playback medium developed by Sony and introduced in 1987. Suggest you rewrite Wiki in that case. D=Digital A=Audio T=Tape I don't remember saying that the recorded signal was analogue.

    Going Old School

It is tape in every sense. The signal is digital rather than analogue but the recording medium is a tape in a cassette. I replaced my DAT tape recorder with a mini-disk so I could have more control over the indexing.

    Going Old School

The Users Manual is still available if you want a copy. PM me with your e-mail. I had a DAT recorder some years back - a good machine. Unfortunately I messed up some tracks being used as a backing for a play. Switched to mini disk as the indexing of tracks is so much easier.

    Can the MR16 record itself?

Since when did the MR16 have RCA sockets, mine are all 1/4" phono? First:-I presume you are trying to apply effects to your raw recording, in which case the Aux Out are the better choice as you can locate to individual tracks (including 15/16 if you have a final mix down) Second:- When you...

An Idiots Guide To The D80 Please.

Don't think it works that way round. After all why are you trying to make a recorder sync to something else? The recorder is not a sound generator.

File clean up on Fostex MR-8HD

"Delete" only marks the files as unwanted but does not remove them from the disk. The only way to clean up the disk is to reformat. So download the files you want to keep on to your PC and "Format" the disk. See p124 of the User Manual. The history of the MR series suggests that they were...

    Fostex MR-8 + drum machine?

Have a look at Synchronizing with MIDI in the User Manual. I am not a MIDI expert but I understand that you can create a tempo map in the MR8 which would control a drum machine. The best advice is look in the manual and give it a go! You can't bust anything.

    downloading to PC

Each track is imported as a .WAV file so it becomes Fostex independent. Treat as you would any .WAV file. You should select a folder to import to from the LH window in WAVManager. (See insructions P5 item 1). You then recover the files from that folder.

    downloading to PC

Go to fostexinternational.com and download WAVManager (plus instruction pdf file). This will allow you to download individual tracks to your PC. I have used Audacity (free program) to edit sound tracks but there are many other editors available.

    FOSTEX M80/R8 play speed? Help

The M80 is a "fixed" speed machine at a nominal 15. The only speed variant I can see is the pitch control with +/- 10% of nominal speed. To change the speed radically, you would probably need a new capstan of a different diameter.

    PSU for FR2 recorder

Don't see why not. I suggest a regulated supply and make sure the capacity of the supply will meet the consumption of the FR2. The manual claims 5.7 - 10 W so anything better than 1A should do.

Fostex VF16 approved hard drives -- list?

The service manual says the drive is a 3.5" E-IDE 5.1 Gb drive. I am sorry i don't have the list either. Can send the service manual if that is of any help.

Behringer XENYX 1002 FX to FD-4 MULTITRACKER

See P8 of the User Manual. You plug it into a normal stereo input on the Behringer. Are you using the Behringer effects into your multitracker? If so, output the 1002FX into the inputs of the FD-4. I cannot see any reference to effects on the FD-4.

    fostex fr2-le recording level display

Probably if you take the level up to just under the "overload" indicators it may work better. There have been a number of posts about low recording levels on Fostex machines so this may be another example. have you got version 1.2 of the software? If not update from the Fostex International site.

Removing hard drive MR-8 hd/cd instructions (since USB won't work)

Try SCV London (+442084181471) (in UK 02084181471) This is the service dept. for Fostex and they may be able to help or even offer an instruction book.

Shareing +recording Fostex 24 24 files for recording?,.

The easy answer is yes if you can use the A/DAT optical or Digital Output. Unfortunately the USB option is not directly available and converters are needed. The home recording machines like the MR series have USB connection and can talk directly to the PC. That is why I suggested PC editing and...

Shareing +recording Fostex 24 24 files for recording?,.

Would it be easier to stay PC based for outputting and mixing? I was thinking that a program like Audacity might be the easier way of mixing the digital signals.

Removing hard drive MR-8 hd/cd instructions (since USB won't work)

Sorry I could not have been more help. I have a folder of User Manuals for Fostex machines but it is not as complete as I would like. The Service Manuals were even rarer. I hope you can find someone who has a copy and is prepared to share it. Are you in the USA? There is a company in London who...
