    Compression

Some people actually do both, a little while tracking just to get a hotter signal and to avoid 'overs', and whatever else you need at mixdown.

Mono outputs from phantom powered XLR mike.

Ok, I think I just figured out how to do what you want without building anything. Plug the mic into the recorder's mic input, plug a 1/4" jack into that channels insert point ONLY HALFWAY, that should allow you to steal a signal from the insert without interrupting the channel, plug that jack...

Mono outputs from phantom powered XLR mike.

Does the Antares have a built in mic pre? If not it would probably be better and less complicated to just Autotune after you record.

    pre / post?

Yup that's right, Pre Fader for monitors so that once the performer has a mix they like it wont change when you move faders. Post Fader for effects so that when you fade out a channel the effects will fade out too, If you don't want the effects to fade out you can use a pre fader aux.

    XLR Snake

If all you need is 25 ft then it might be better to make high quality cables instead, you will be able to use them for other things, cables laid flat should fit under a door and allow it to close whereas a snake won't, also running to different places obviously wont be a problem. If you think...

Recording Bass with Bass Pod Pro

Just be careful, I once recorded a bassist who had a POD, he dialed up an Ampeg sim preset that he used to use, and plugged in direct, everything sounded smooth and sweet through the nearfields, great. I took the resulting recording to a soundcheck a couple days after and played it back through...

    Help with Computer Recording

One way is to get (rent, buy, borrow) a mixer which has as many mic inputs as you will need for the whole band and connect the main outputs to the stereo line in of the SB live card. Mic up the whole band but plug the bass into a Direct box. If the reason you want to play at the same time is so...

    2 simple questions....

Ahhh, but if you ask most non musicians to describe what a mic looks like almost all of em will describe a 58 I'll bet. :D

    Track layout hints

Yup, SM nailed it, tracksheets are the standard way to keep track of all the mayhem. It helps if you have them neat and nicely laid out too, not just scribbles on the corners of napkins, because you will want to archive them along with the raw tracks so that when you have to do the remixes for...

    Behringer Truth vs. Tannoy Reveal

Glejs, the best thing for you to do would be to take one of your unmixed songs over to each of their studios and spend an afternoon actually working with each set of monitors, not just listening to cds. The most impressive sounding monitor isn't always the best one, working an actual mix on each...

    ultra mike vs. ghost preamps?

Damn, now I'm gonna have to buy one too. LOL :D

will this setup work for live club recording????

I'm not familiar with the pre/post status of the A&H direct outs, see if you can find a manual to download or just call the FOH guy and ask him. One thing is certain though, if he changes his input trim gain it will also change your levels. There are no problems with using all 16 inserts of the...

    Communicating With the Booth!

If you only plug the cable into the insert point up to the first 'click' (about halfway) then you can 'steal' from the insert without interrupting the signal to the rest of the board. In Logic you probably need to disable 'Software Monitoring' in Audio Preferences.

    Unix/Linux anyone?

I think the new Mac OSX is Linux based.

    ultra mike vs. ghost preamps?

I have heard a lot of people say that the M series has the same preamps as the Ghost series, but when I checked the Soundcraft website the exact wording of the advertising was something like -"preamps BASED on the same design as the Ghost Consoles" , that phrase leaves a lot of leeway for design...

    Mega-cheapie mics

You could go for a Shure SM 57, It'll do a pretty good job on most vocalists and is one of the first mics to grab for recording snare drum or miking a guitar amp, it isn't the best choice for acoustic guitar, but if you don't have phantom power it might be your best choice. Costs about $80. The...

Orginal Mackie CR 1604 BUY IT YES OR NO?

The original 1604 only came with 6 (or was it 8?) mic preamps, if you wanted the full 16 you had to add on an expander, so make sure this board has it.

    Phantom Power Question

Yep. I'm not aware of any mic preamp that supplies phantom via 1/4 TRS, it's always XLR.

Is this a good idea (recording a show)

If you want to attempt this you will need to talk to the engineer first to find out if it's even possible, the board might not have direct outs other than the inserts and I bet he'll be using those on quite a few channels for compression and gating. it might be possible to take feeds off the...
