+1 External drives are cheap enough right now to do this too.

I also have one of the old (or is it vintage) MXR Dynacomp pedals for 'live' playing, but use the Waves plug-ins for recording.

The Lexicon and PreSonus interfaces are built well, have a good rep and have been around for quite awhile now. The Mic pre-amps in the PreSonus units are quite nice!

AT-2020 is a dependable condenser and I like the Blue Snowball with it's 3 position switch (cardioid, cardioid with -10dB pad and omni).

Regarding your second issue, It's been awhile since I've used that program, but I believe in your "preferences" you should be able to check or uncheck something that indicates "software playthrough" or similiar. Good luck!
