    Show me your pedalboard!

This is my 'concert' rig. It's a plug and play kinda deal. Especially when there's multiple bands for a show. Power in/guitar in/effects loop out/amp out. Done. The second is my grab and go for little gigs.

Are overhead mics just too subjective?

I gotta go with the SM81's also. My reason being that they are the flattest curve of most SDC's and because of this are not going to be artificially amplifying any room nodes that you probably have already going for you. You will probably really have to look at reasonably priced used pairs for...

    Bass DI

Is the noise present without an instrument plugged in? Working backwards through the various connections and cables eliminating one at a time will generally spot the culprit. If it only happens when the bass is plugged in then "It's The Bass". Something isn't shielded/grounded/cold solder...

    Difficult Vocal Help

This . On more than one occasion I've run into this. It certainly wasn't the chain in my case or the settings.....I recorded one guys voice that actually sounded like it was feeding back like an amp when he really pressed hard on it. At moderate or low levels it was a nice sound and clear.

    Need new smaller mixer

I love Techies! I never mentioned RF...And there's none in my area to speak of. At least none that can get past the grid... I get the technical paper part of the wire specs. Been there. Done that. And I'm not an expert. But whatever this crap that I fished out of the dumpster after a demo...

    Need new smaller mixer

I was wondering, since you are investigating the possibilities available to 'fix' the noise problem, if you have considered assigning an aux pair to be the monitor master? Or am I not understanding the noise you're having?? Mine was noisy @ the mon level master and the two speaker out...

    Need new smaller mixer

I'm talking more than just RF. I'm talking impedance, counter EMF from other cables carrying signal/power in the area..... I was an electrician for 30+ years. I was on a lot of projects that had something to do with computer floors/ server rooms....etc. So sometimes in a demo you can...

    Need new smaller mixer

I've been following this thread for a little while. I own a Toft. Its an ATB8 ver3. I did have it (for a while) as my playback using the monitor outs to the monitor speakers. It was sorta noisy. More than I wanted to deal with. It's now just a side-car for the channels. I like the EQ and the...

What is the best order in mixing tracks?

Of course. The two buss is what is assigned to your L/R stereo output be it stems or individual tracks etc etc.... I usually wind up with a master fader with only a small limit to it...As well as all the stems which is where I use my comps and anything else thats 'needed'. These ALL get bussed...

What is the best order in mixing tracks?

Well, I wasn't really referring to tracking. Since I track all analog into ProTools, I don't have a need for any sort of master and certainly nothing across a buss to control things such as the levels...I don't add a master fader at all until the overdub tracking and only as my playback master...

What is the best order in mixing tracks?

This is a very interesting discussion. I like it. As for compressing the MB I usually only use a light limiting and if it gets out of hand then I trim the input. So, in light of that....I have a question for the responders.... If you are 'in-the-box' do you mix primarily to a master two...

    How to achieve this vocal

Yep. All that has been said. Also a very very good vocal chain. Great mic. Great preamp. Good room. Probably a booth. And not messed with. I get this every time out if it's called for.

    Neumann TLM 103

If you did take the plunge on an SM7B you should probably also add a Cloudlifter to it with that 2488. It will make things so much better. Better gain-staging without the addition of the inevitable noise you can expect from having the preamp up as much as will be needed for that combo. The...

Cardioid vs hyper vs super for vocals

The only place I care to use a hyper-cardioid or such is on a drum kit. A hyper-cardioid under a ride cymbals goes a long way towards nulling out any drums under it. Other than that most of the reality about the various patterns along these lines and their effects has been adroitly covered.

What is the best order in mixing tracks?

Everyone has their own methodology to this art. Some people paint and others draw.....they are still illuminating something in their efforts. In a multi-song production, sometimes the entire thing begs to be treated as a whole rather than 8-15 individual portions. Sometimes not. My point of...

What is the best order in mixing tracks?

Drums....Bass...Lead Vox.....These are the fundamental of the song...usually. I will work on these until I don't 'need' anything else to get the point of the song and the arrangement across. I will then make my stems for these and this is where I will bring everything else. I will not...

    Rode NTK vs. AT4033

I own several higher end tube mics as well as the AT4033. I would never choose the 4033 as a V.O. mic. As a great utility mic for many many other sources it is golden. There's not many drum kit overheads better than the 4033 and the list of it's use goes on. Don't misunderstand my review of...

    China Mics! Would you?

A lot of boutique builders do outsource parts. Most are made where they can keep their costs within a range where they can both make a few bucks as well as offer a product that they have control of the quality. There's a big trend now to outsource the....pc boards, transformers, capsules, etc...

    Best reverb pedal

A Blues Jr has a reverb tank. It is a short spring style tank and has audiotronics drivers. But it is short and honky sounding and there's no decay (dwell) control. The only control is the driver in the half tube........

    Studio monitor size help

I can see you have "Shiny New Box Syndrome" and what has been suggested may not register clearly until you actually spend and install at which time my guess will be "oh, it's not that much difference"....... Treat your room. Make more airspace around your monitors (REALLY) which will mean a...
