    50s/60s bass sound

Copping James Jamerson, Carol Kaye, Bob Babbitt, and Michael Henderson bass lines can be a challenge. It's a little easier when you get the basics of the sound correct but then there's the "feel".....I only mention these four but there are 20 more GREAT soulful and funky bass men who are...

    Microphone Advice

The Lauten on your list is almost a 'one-size-fits-all' mic. It's pretty flat but very true and it's build is probably better than the others. The Rode K2 is a classic. Never heard a bad one. If this is your budget you should seek out ADK mics. There's not a lot in this price range that get close.

how the hell did they mix the beatles on one speaker?

I hope you realize just what the Altec 604e was all about at that time. And the power amps that were being used to power them. As well as the design of the box they were housed in. Speaker technology has "tried" to come a long way since then but there's only so much you can do with transducer...

    Microphone Advice

None of those mics is going to have the fidelity of the Neumann you already have. That being said there's a lot of differences in all of them as will always be the case with cheaper (budget) mics. My suggestion is to look at used mics from a reputable dealer with a return policy. And expect to...

Mic and preamp in range 800-900 budget

Hopefully you have a 500 series rack power supply....the WA12 is not a stand-alone mic pre. You will need a lunch-box of some sort to mount it. The GAP is a stand alone. The Baby-Bottle is a bright mic the 4040 is too just not as much. A little better low end on the 4040. Tighter. I would...

    Recording Bass at home.

"Real" bassist who is also able to play real guitar parts. The difference is which side of your brain your using. I have a lot of different bass recording methods and they are in play according to the material. Here's three of the 'main' ones: 1. Musical styling leaning towards R&B and...

    Thoughts on the Eleven Rack?

This is why I have three of them in my studio. Even if I'm only tracking things that will get replaced with a live and loud amp. Everyone gets to play together at tracking.....No bleed into drum mics.....with a careful set-up chances are the tracks taken will be at least a layer if not the...

    Compression on the way in?

Compression going in is usually meant (in digital captures) to add a vibe or to keep a heavily dynamic singer from giving the track a huge swing in input levels. That being said you should have a piece of gear that add's something to the track. Doing nothing is just that...nothing and probably...

Seeking Vocal Mic Advice - Studio Pics Included

There's a lot of $300 mics that will do the job. Unbelievably on Ebay right now is a used 3Zigma Chi body with a C12 cap and a suspension and a box for under 300. Not a mic to be taken lightly.

    Thoughts on the Eleven Rack?

The original Op was about the Eleven and how it compares to the other amp sims and such. My post was not about "what is best" for any particular usage and is NOT meant in any way a comparison to what I do as to others....It's simply answering a post about the Eleven which I have a lot of...

    Thoughts on the Eleven Rack?

I suppose I could pontificate a moment on this subject. I own a studio. I also have lots of amps boutique and off the shelf. Love them. I have played through as well as have recorded all of the "big three" Fractal, Kemper and Eleven Rack. I own three Eleven racks for a simple reason....they...

    My dream guitar..

Man I do 'get' the effect of wanting an instrument and wanting it the color you like. As well as the model etc etc....There's so many little things that make a guitar "great" ..."usable"..."poor"....There is , however, one simple factor I have found in getting an instrument that really "sings"...

I'm sure I posted in this thread back-in-the-day but couldn't find it. It says I voted. Things have changed somewhat since then. To whit: LDC & MDC TYPES AKG 414EB ADK Area 51 TT tube modded to M249 circuit and a GK-49d cap ADK Area 51 TT tube modded to ELAM 251 circuit w/ GK-12d cap...

Favorite Bass recording approach & gear?

There are several very important parts to recording bass guitar. I hear a lot of recordings that do not pay attention to some of these aspects and to me, the performance and the impact of the music suffers. First. Make sure you can hear the fundamental. It doesn't do the music any good if...

    Basic questions from a n00b

Ya always want the 'out' to be better than the 'in'........I do so much piano that I guess I take it for granted that anyone can mix it.....I have my little piano pathway that I use for the most part and it doesn't fail.............However...TRACKING piano. Different animal entirely.

    Basic questions from a n00b

I doubt if the OP is still listening. Or didn't anyone sense the trolling? I mean...who hires a mixer for piano/vocal tracks? Unless we're talking major releases. And I thought it was quite hilarious that third or fourth post was about compression and then the entire explanations about...

What are your top 10 most influential albums?

Influences can run a gamut of reasons for the influence. Some are musical muses, others are for the songs, others still for the production values that affect my path as a producer/engineer. And there's the ones that simply make me feel right on any given moment of any given day. Axis:Bold As...

    Stacking compressors, new to me

This is a lot more popular than you think. Most of the higher-end producers I know use it on a wide variety of voices. Sometimes on an instrument but mostly voices. I use it all the time.

    The Sound of Silence

Do not assume that working even the smallest most seemingly insignificant things can't make an impact of the final result. "Up to par sonically" is something achievable by anyone on any system and all that is required is patience, an ability to learn, and taking the time to do the tasks. The...
