    Noiseless Pickups

Yes. And is probably the MAJOR cause of all emi/rfi leakage at any point in the chain. Amps are especially bad at this. Modern tube amps (mass produced ones especially) with PCB's that are solder dipped will have poor conductance at some point in their lives. This leads to the increase of noise...

    What monitors do you use?

This thread is so old I couldn't find my original post. So I've probably upgraded twice since then. The Genelec 1029's with the 1091 sub have moved into the living room and have become part of the home theater. So they do get used as reference for mixes. The Tannoy System 8's have moved to...

    Vocal Fx

The "identity" of music w/vocals rests entirely on the vocal sound. A compilation of different songs by different artists may have a variety of effects for the vocal artists and this will be their 'signature' if you will. A single collection of songs by the same artist should have something that...

    Eq

I don't use much EQ at all. It's kind of a thing for me to get it right at the capture.....That being said, even though I do have a large library of stuff to choose from, I find I only use a few and only for specific things. I never use anything else on bass except the API 550a or 550b. It just...

    Favorite Recordings

To really get to the heart of a recording one has to separate the 'engineering' aspect from the 'production'....... If you want to discover purity in recording, investigate any of the direct-to-disc recordings out there. Sheffield Labs and others. A lot of the great Producers are (and...

In the market for a new bass DI... a versatile one

I've been playing and recording bass for over 40 years. There are lots of choices these days for a bass pre/DI/pedal. But for a small budget there is nothing better than the old Hartke Bass Attack. You can find them used for $50us. And they sound great and do exactly what you describe you are...

    Anyone know this Daking MicPReOne?

The Daking is a huge step up from most preamps in the middle to inexpensive level of kit. There are a few things to consider and they may not make a bit of difference to you. 1. There's no on/off switch 2. There's no insert 3. No output level only input gain But that doesn't mean it doesn't...

    Snare drum sound

The CLA 2A is too slow for a punchy bass sound IMHO. Thats why the 1176. The 1176 behind the API 550B EQ should get you anywhere you could need to go. I use LA2A's on vocals a lot. Too 'fluffy' for a rock bass track.

    Snare drum sound

I wouldn't go as far as to use a sim unless you want it to sound completely different. Thats what I use the sims for. In your case a SMALL amount of EQ at mix will go a long way. Do you have any of the API EQs found in the Waves library? If so, use those. Also the Waves Scheps 73 is excellent...

    Snare drum sound

P-Bass. String choice is dependent on style of music. Tube pre-amp with Fender tone stack. Alembic F-1X is a great one to have. Another is the Eden WT-300B. The Avalon U-5 is another. 1176 after. It doesn't have to be a P-Bass but recording bass without a great set of hardware at the front end...

    Snare drum sound

I find it's exactly the opposite when recording bass. Flats give me way more defined punch.

    Snare drum sound

Both questions: Snare is probably a deep wood snare and it sounds like the tuning is low and the snare wires a little loose. There are two hihat tracks one playing straight 16's and one playing the snare hits open/close effect. The hats for this are heavy and recorded separately and recorded...

    recording questions re-stereo/mono

Focus on what your ear is telling you it wants to hear. I realize that having a technique to try makes it easier to start from some place but its also easy to over analyze whats going on and lose sight of what you want things to sound like.

    recording questions re-stereo/mono

You take a track...in my example it was a guitar track....and you dupe or split it out to another mono track. You apply a dense reverb to the new track and run the gain down while increasing the reveb volume so most of what you hear is the reverb of the track. You then pan these two tracks...

    ART MPA & VLA Combo

I've had mine (both) since 1996 when they were first released. They are both "Made In The USA" units. Made a lot of recordings with them. I gave the MPA to my son-in-law and had JJ Audio upgrade the VLA which I still use. Great starter units.

    recording questions re-stereo/mono

Yes as far as where the programs are usually split concerning the keyboard itself. And this does have a lot to do with live performances so that the spatial awareness generated is one that is pleasant to the listener. However, there are always elements in each program (factory ones for certain)...

    recording questions re-stereo/mono

Good advice all around. One thing to seriously consider with recording tracks from a keyboard, especially with multi-timbral layered sounds. You will find that even when capturing these as a stereo track that the panning given by the presets makes zero sense as far as an actual L/R...

Do you really need that many tracks ??

    Yep.

    Always check in mono?!

Try the Sidewidener by Joey Sturgis..Very interesting. And mono compatible. You won't us it everywhere but where you do use can be special.
