    distorted vocals

there are about eight thousand ways to distort a vocal. using a fucked up mic is a pretty decent way to do it. you can get one that doesnt really kick in with the distortion till it is overloaded... which is useful. and often this sort of mic will do some nice limiting as well.... anyway, not...

Are Jade Audio brand cables good?

i have some jade cable lying around. it gets stuff from point A to point B without much ado. keep the lines short and you should be OK. i wouldnt take them on the road or anything either. it seems to be EXACTLY the same as hosa to me. or close enough to not matter what the differences are...

    Dynamic mics and preamps

i think it is also a question of gain. some cheaper pres have a way of not sounding so good when pushed. my presonus pres come to mind here. i have to crank them up almost all the way to get my 441 to work for vocals... and the pres themselves seem to have some non-linearities in the response...

    Oh... My... God... M-Audio Solaris

the drummer has that, "i read about swing in a book but never actually heard it" feel. not that i can swing... man it takes some serious work to sound right. i think that rap analogy is right. lots of people tend to think, oh i'll try that rap thing, and they get it wrong. lots of the kids...

sorry for the non-use of emoticons. i was joking.

    Stereo vs Mono

for the most part stereo v. mono it is a matter of taste and mono is better. cool people record in mono, lame people record in stereo. it is that simple. my rule of thumb is to think about sound source size to intended listener position. are you supposed to be "in the small rehearsal room" with...

    multi-purpose budget monitors

right now all over the web you can find KRK V88s for $700 a pair. those are active units, so no need for any other purchase. pretty sweet deal. they get mixed reviews, but most reviewers are comparing them to the $1200+ crowd where they dont fare so well. but in the $700 club, you will probably...

    drum mics vs. crappy set

ditto above. a 57 and an atm25 is a safe long term purchase. also, i have never heard your drums, but the RIGHT heads will make a big difference, and might make your drums sound pretty cool. sadly, a few sets of heads for your kit for experimenting purposes will probably cost you more than...

    recording in a sphere

also, outdoors a lot of music sounds weird. it is fairly normal to hear stripped down folk/country outdoors (the last june carter cash album had some tracking done on the front porch of her mom's house). but i am sure many have experienced the strange sound of unreinforced drums outdoors, and...

Recommendations to upgrade hip hop recording studio- Need better mic

also, how you "sound like out loud" in hip hop terms is usually, either unamped, fucking around with friends or live thru an sm58 and a crappy PA. standing still in front of a pop shielded mic, head straight up, arms relaxed is a very artifical environment for most hip hop artists. maybe not...

Recommendations to upgrade hip hop recording studio- Need better mic

you might want to get a high quality hand held for backup if you find you got someone in that is giving you mediocre tracks... give them a hand held, turn on same fake stage lights and let them pretend they are playing live. with hip hop a great take is incredibly important. anyway, hand held...

gonna make some cords .. canare.. wat type tho?

depends on how long your runs are... if you run 100 feet + then go with the star quad, if you don't you should be able to deal with the 2 conductor cable, which by the way, is WAY EASIER TO SOLDER. also, i find it is easier to solder the neutrik connectors than the switchcraft. cost about...

cheap mic for recording acoustic guitar

the elliot smith sound is all about the sm57. i think on a few records the sm57 is the ONLY mic he used. voice AND guitar. the flaming lips have a whole variety of acoustic guitar sounds... so hard to tell. i would say, get an sm57 and a hypey condenser like a 603 and mix and match.

Mic Preamp Characteristics - colored or clean suggestions

the EH tube from this page is the one black lion recomends http://store.yahoo.com/triodeel/12axec7057.html i use NOS GE grey plates which i like for their smooth top and affordable price for NOS. ($10-$15) i worked on some litigation for a toxic cleanup of a tube manufacturing facility (GE's...

Mic Preamp Characteristics - colored or clean suggestions

i have the symetrix which i really like. yes, clear, a bit bright stock. but, of course check out the monte mods to make it much better. with a few hours behind the soldering iron i would bet on an sx202 against almost any clean and clear preamp in the under $500 category. the aphex pre is...

    Spring Reverb

i have had both the tube and ss versions of the pioneer reverb. the tube was cool cause you could wire it so that all you got was wet signal (but only in mono). but the tube unit was WAY more noisy. sold it. and it had all sorts of rare tubes that were a pain to get. the tapco 4400 is cool...

    Recording, quick question

if you are planning on doing a bunch of tracks and are working in 24 bit -10 is all you will need. that way you will get some more headroom... clipping is the worst. the WORST. low level in 24 bit audio aint so bad. AINT so bad.

cheap mic for recording acoustic guitar

hey huma.... what do you consider a great acoustic guitar recording? could you name a few? cuz, there are a whole bunch of ways to skin this cat: bright condenser, flat condenser, ribbon, dynamic.... personally, i dont like that detailed and shimmery stuff (bright condenser sound)... i...
