    The Hives, The Strokes.......The Kinks

reamping is cool. definately try it. but it is gonna sound more hives than kinks. the kinks vocal distortion happened at the pres i believe, or by overloading the mic. all day and all the night as a classic example. distortion all over that vocal in the chorus. but it doesnt sound reamped at...

    The Hives, The Strokes.......The Kinks

well, if you are set on the vocal sound i would do it on the front end (big point of debate could insue here). i feel like it is easier to do this sort of thing in the real world, and it is nice for the performer to hear what is going on as it happens... as in, it is nice for them to hear the...

    The Hives, The Strokes.......The Kinks

yea, for drums you want some distant micing. i would get the drums in a nice place in the room, and have some treatment materials around. ghetto materials will work fine. a bass trap or two and some shipping blankets to control HF. if you have some diffusion materials those would be nice too...

    The Hives, The Strokes.......The Kinks

what format are you recording to? what kind of mics are you gonna use, what kind of space? i have done some stuff like this before... i might be able to help... you are right about the room, it helps. you need a semi-live room at least. i have tried to pull this shit off in 7 foot deadened...

    AT4040, M179, V67, GXL2200, SM7 clips here

yea, that 4040 really excelled at everything in the middle. thanks for putting this up, last night i made a rather strange late evening decision to order an m179 and i think i am going to end up being happy with it. it lacks the solid mids of the 4040, but i have a feeling it might end up...

    Monitoring and headphones...

i have used both the sonys and the grados. for mixing purposes the grados are much MUCH better. of course, you are looking at an open can configuration, which makes them less useful for tracking. but the sonys are hyped all over in a sort of strange way. the grados are a bit "prettified"...

    Recording acoustic guitar

ummm.... the amount of room that ends up on the recording is based on the mic's pick-up pattern, not the size of the diaphram. an LDC set to cardiod will have less room for example than an omni SDC

    Monitoring and headphones...

best/cheapest coolest headphones for mixing: grado hr80s. made in brooklyn! $80 or so. read the reviews... them well liked. for tracking... get the more mes. harvey is a nice guy, he runs his business to be very CONSUMER oriented. liberal return policy. good warranty. stuff like that. he as...

Recording drums in my living room

i say better sounding room's benefits will FAR outweigh any cable issues unless you start getting serious RFI or something like that. if you feel like soldering a lot in the next few days you could put together a 40 foot mic snake for not TOO much money. maybe $100? lets see, about $2 a...

    distorted vocal w/compressor

funny, i clicked on this thread cause i thought you needed help distorting a vocal track with a compressor. which is a fun, but somewhat difficult thing to do depending on the compressor. seems like you are getting along well without my help.

    Is this true?

ac30s are fucking loud as hell. in the 60's bands used to play 1000+ people venues with ac30s and no PA. 30 watts of vox is like 2000 watts of crate.

    Is this true?

sure, why not? sounds like fun to me. especially if you are going for that "mini amp in a shoebox sound". mini amps sound fun miced. especially if you can play with using a couple different mics and a couple different mini amps. you can get them to sound pretty big or pretty tiny.

    bass kick and boom

the idea with the bass drum is to let your real bass drum cover most freqencies and use the 808 as a little subsynth kinda effect. dont like the 808 sounds? sheesh. someone needs to watch breakin' 2 again!

    Help Me Make a Choice

i would get the NOVA cause i like how it looks.

    bass kick and boom

i would start with some 808 kick samples. they have that boom and a nice attack to supplement your recorded kick. and if you dont want that attack you can just filter it out. 808 samples abound. not much need to edit them.

    bass kick and boom

i would guess that what you are hearing on those records are samples layered on top of read drums all neatly lined to an electronic groove in protools. you could do it that way. if you want some 60hz "we like the cars that go" BOOOOM there are some other ways as well. get yourself a $5 trigger...

    instrument mic?

your mic choice for acoustic guitar is going to be the second greatest contributer to the tone of your recorded track after, of course, the sound of the actual guitar. here are some big BIG huge generalizations: if you want your acoustic guitar to sound like the acoustic guitar on the intro of...
