well, considering that the rane ms1b has a pretty big roll off at 50 hz, it distinguishes itself from the rest of the pres for sure. not that you NEED much info below 50 hz for many sources.... but bass instruments can really benefit from it.... also, the symetrix can have some pretty simple...

my guess is that unless you are running 100 feet or so of cabling, your problem isnt balanced v. unbalanced. as someone said, hum and noise are two pretty different issues... perhaps you have both? two different cures. for hum you need to isolate the ground loop or just dont use your hum...

i would say the most dangerous thing is getting a bad track. first of all you will want it well shock mounted. the body of that mic is very ringy- it resonates easily when in a high SPL/low frequency situation. you might even want to do the somewhat common mod of filling a bit of the inside...

my rule of thumb is to not get strips. i suppose if you are investing $1K or more there are some decent ones out there, but i believe you will get better price/performance out of individual pieces. if you win that dbx 242, i think you will find that your $100ish EQ is about as good as anything...
