    DMP3 vs. Sytek

well, considering that the rane ms1b has a pretty big roll off at 50 hz, it distinguishes itself from the rest of the pres for sure. not that you NEED much info below 50 hz for many sources.... but bass instruments can really benefit from it.... also, the symetrix can have some pretty simple...

Hum Eliminator? Noise Gate? What to quiet my rig?

my guess is that unless you are running 100 feet or so of cabling, your problem isnt balanced v. unbalanced. as someone said, hum and noise are two pretty different issues... perhaps you have both? two different cures. for hum you need to isolate the ground loop or just dont use your hum...

    Rap Vocal.

somehow you got that list of good hip hop mics. i would try them all. add the beyer m88 or m69 to that list. maybe start with the re20 if you have the $$$, otherwise the marshall or the beyer m69.

    superlux

uhhh. maybe. probably not. what is your budget/needs? there are some other SUPER cheap mics that might work a little better.

    Blue Balls?

this is really a "bizarro world" feature of the blue ball (as marketed by blue). oh boy, i always WISHED my dynamics NEEDED phantom to work. that whole, not-needing phantom power thing has been KILLING me. again, yea, it will get you a cool unique sound. but a $199 cool unique sound? no...

    superlux

absurdly cheap. and decent enough to justify the price. if i were to duct tape a mic to my dog to see what it sounds like at the dog park, i would use my superlux. i also take it to shows, have no fears of it getting dropped or spilled on.

the DBX Mini Pre or other good Mic Pre?

never tried it myself, but you could also take a look at getting a bellari mp105 and popping out the $0.30 opamps (mounted in a nice easy to remove socket) and $1.00 tube and popping in better parts. $50 on ebay, $20 on parts. the bellari is NOT a starved plate design. it runs the tube at...

    Blue Balls?

another vote for hating the blue ball. sold mine right away. overpriced! overpriced! buy a decent "tom mic" or some other smallish dynamic. pop the thing open and take out the capsule. $29 for the mic (or so) then buy some sort of ball. hard probably. so not a wiffle ball. go to a thrift...

    affordable mic???

the 219 had resonances that affected the capsule. they fixed with the 319 redesign with an open area around the capsule, but below it is some sort of bell like structure. shockmounting fixes most of the problems with the bell body. for $200 you can get a perfectly decent vocal mic. problem...

just wondering how my mic compares to what is out there

HOWEVER, what you are gonna have to do is feed your craving... how does your 3035 stack up compared to other mics? the best way to find out is to USE other mics, see how they react in your hands, with your placement, in your room, with your signal chain... all interesting things... borrow...

    Sennheiser MD441 Mic --- Help !!!

glad you got your money back. how diga like the one in the store? hmmm... 441. for me the sweetest smoothest vocals come from a 441, with the bass roll off adjusted to the singer, into my earthworks pre, to the dbx 242 with a boost at 10k to air the thing out. sweet sweet high end. there is...

    Sennheiser MD441 Mic --- Help !!!

still what are you gonna do? pay $700 for a new one? it is probably fucked up. depending on what you paid for it, you might just want to sell it as a distressed mic. get a quote first. you can be 100% honest and see if there are takers...

    Portable recording devices

yea, but can it ALSO carry enough music to last quite a few van rides.... NO. can it dump the music to a universal format. NO. with an MP3 player you could set up an FTP site, and if you stay at someones house with a high speed connection dump all your files to the site... another advantage....

    Akg D330bt

it may be a personal thing, but i dont like AKG dynamic mics... never heard one that i particularly got jazzed about. HOWEVER, if they are just giving them away it cant hurt to try... but as far as DIRT CHEAP bass drum mics, you can probably do better. i just got a CAD TSM411 for $15 and it...

    Portable recording devices

NAWWW... y'all are totally off. what you need is a hard drive based portable mp3 player with firewire/usb and an audio input. they are out there for like $300. first of all, throw as big of a drive in it as you can... second of all instead of bringing the book of CDs to play in the van, you...

Transformers and how to get them.

ebay aint so bad for transformers at all. i just got a cool 600:600 hammond off of ebay for like $7. building an isolation box with it. prolly have a nice color too! some of the sellers will give you the pin outs or the specs or whatever you need... just look around. good deals abound, altec...

this forum is called "the rack" . arent we supposed to focus on "the rack" here... of course, the above post is good advice.

    MK319 For Front Of Kick.......Dangerous???

i would say the most dangerous thing is getting a bad track. first of all you will want it well shock mounted. the body of that mic is very ringy- it resonates easily when in a high SPL/low frequency situation. you might even want to do the somewhat common mod of filling a bit of the inside...

Focusrite or Presonus? or Option C?

my rule of thumb is to not get strips. i suppose if you are investing $1K or more there are some decent ones out there, but i believe you will get better price/performance out of individual pieces. if you win that dbx 242, i think you will find that your $100ish EQ is about as good as anything...
