    Digital audio interface USB

    1. Dont worry about voltage. Mics require 12-48volts (some are pickier than others but that's usually higher-end mics) but they only require a couple of milliamps of current so stepping up the voltage is not a problem.

    What software to use?

It's all subjective as to what's easier for you (just like with audio daws). I prefer Sony Vegas Studio. It's cheap ($50 or less on sale), powerful with plenty of effects and you can use your audio vst's. I've used it to do music videos, commercial videos, multi-camera plays and airshows.

    Cubase and Drums

Download Reaper. (the 'demo' is fully functional) See if it works there. If it does, something is wrong with Cubase or its configuration (you probably dont have the vst where it can find it) If it doesn't work in Reaper then soemthing is wrong with the installation of Halion. You have to...

    Creating own samples

zip files have nothing to do with sampling, that's just a way of storing files together. what you will need is a sampler vsti to use in your daw Try: TX16Wx Software Sampler (yes Cubase, Reaper or any other vst-capable sequencer can use it). It's free, powerful and fairly easy to use (drag...

    Starting over with an iMac

I switched over to an iMac a couple of years ago. I use Reaper, same as I used on my Windows DAW, and it's just fine with mac vst's (be aware you cannot use PowerPC or windows vst's on an Intel Mac...) I use a couple of outboard firewire drives and the same Motu828mkII I used on my previous...

DAW vs other Workflow. Frustrated with computers...

If you are easily distracted by options and buttons, maybe you just need a simpler daw. Garageband on the Mac, or on Windows either Mixcraft or Sony Acid Music Studio (both under $60). Keep stuff simple and learn to ignore shiny things.

What software can record 4 independent channels internally from 4 channel live source

Any modern DAW. As long as your soundcard has separate channels, you're golden (beware, some usb mixers only pass a stereo pair, not separate channels.) Look at REAPER; cheap, easy and powerful.

XLR or TRS inputs for new studio monitors?

no. sound-on-sound magazine did an in-depth investigation into connectors a few years back and determined that xlr's and trs's have virtually the same contact area and resistance. even rca's aren't too far behind. they just suggested that we should stay away from 1/8" plugs whenever we can as...
