    better room mics?

    Hi all, I am using a pair of AKG 414's (LDCs) as room mics to record a simple folk band (in stereo, AB configuration), but am interested in what mic's might be better/more interesting. I tried Neumanns KM84's (SDC), but didnt like the results as much. I think I might stick with LDCs. Are...

    half-inch models

    I am about to start using an Otari MTR-12II, which is 1/2" and designed for mastering. It looks pretty professional, maybe to much for me. I got mine for $400. Dont try shipping, they are like washing machines.

    no megusta souncards

    no... no, you're right. I didn't mean 'entry level' as in too basic/low quality. I meant as in price range. I guess I am hoping to find something that gives better sound quality for that price. Not possible?...

    no megusta souncards

    So heres my dilemma: I don't want to spend $200 on a new m-audio 1010lt, it just too much for an entry level soundcard, but I dont know if I am ready to spend the ~$500 on a good soundcard. Can anyone suggest a way to get 8 analog ins (no pres necessary) onto my PC for less than $200 and still...

    996->456 tape bias?

    Ah, thanks. Very helpful. Now, maybe someone can tell me how to figure out what bias my machine is set to. You see, there is a switch to choose between two biases, so can anyone help me guess which one is the 996 bias setting? patrick

    996->456 tape bias?

    I have an otari mtr-12II 1/2" 4 track, biased for 996 mastering tape (I forget the tape maker). I want to use some new quantegy 456 tape on the machine. So my question is, what, specifically, will happen to the sound quality if I don't adjust for the bias differences? Will I lose some end of...

    Hows this old tascam mixer?

    Howdy all, I'm looking at picking up a M50 mixer for use with my Otari MTR-12II 4track. Any input on this mixer? I know it is old, but supposedly these tascam decks are good. How are the pres? Plenty of headroom? Anything I should watch out for? Are there XLR in/outs? There is no phantom...

    Otari MX5050 8 track help needed

    More problems... Hi all, I'm trying to get a mtr-12II up and running. It was stated to be in excellent working condition, checked by a technician. It probably was. I am loading 1/2" tape, and it seems to play fine, but rewind and ff go very slow - slower than 1 sec for 1 sec. I am trying...

    Panning Question

    a little clarification on your first point - lets suppose the song is already written, the parts/instruments arranged, and of course playing in the same key, how one be careful with the instruments and octaves used - from a bands point of view, these seem like pretty brutal things to have to...

    Audiophile recording techniques anyone?

    There are a couple things I have heard were issues: for instance, I've read a bit about preserving phase relationships for ALL the instruments, in stereo, because this information is processed in our heads to locate the instrument as a single source (aka soundstaging). So this makes reverb a...

    Audiophile recording techniques anyone?

    Hey all, I've been hearing about audiophile-quality recordings (albums), and it seems these folks are real particular about how the album was recorded. They will even list how the mikes were positioned. Anyone have any input on what some common 'audiophile' techniques are? It seems they do...
