    Getting a Mean Bass Sound.

Korn use a 5 string bass tuned down a whole step to A... much of the fat slappy sound to which you refer is a direct result of this as their bassist uses big fat strings that are slack and so slap about on the fretboard. Not sure about the recording side of what they do but there ya go.

EMG HZ Pickups for bass. Any info?

EMG HZ pickups are most certainly passive. I have EMGs in my bass (dont ask me the specific model numbers) which are active but the HZs are passive. Hence the HZ suffix to differentiate between the two.

    bertolini? bass pick-up question

When I first got an active bass I foolishly left it plugged in. All it did was drain the battery. I dont see how this would fry the pickups tho.... if it did they would end up being fried through enough normal use wouldnt they?

What is the difference between (P) and (J) pick-ups?

That doesnt seem to make much sense to me for one main reason: Volume Controls I should imagine you have a great deal of control between pickup and recording medium when it comes to the level of the signal.... too loud? roll back the volume on the bass a bit, or the amp, or the mixer whatever...

What is the difference between (P) and (J) pick-ups?

i have active pickups in my bass collection 5 string with a 3 band active eq too. its all EMG stuff i added myself although the bass collection basses generally come with active eq i think. mine certainly did. I wouldnt say its "hyperactive" sound wise, but then theres a bunch of controls that...

    Tele EMG mod

Have you considered the possibility of sticking to your passive pickups but upgrading to active electronics? I have EMGs in my bass and they sound great but they do have a totally different character to passives... might be worth investigating if you like the tone of your guitar but just want to...

How do I go down low to B# without getting buzz.....

I asked a friend of mine who knows a helluva lot more about music theory than i do about this whole B# business and she reckoned that C is sometimes written as B# in some instances where a part gets transposed to certain keys from other keys. She didnt know why just knew it happened. And that...

Does this bass have "active electronics?"

A good way to find out would be to take off the cover plate for the control/pickup cavity and see if there are any batteries in there. If not then everythings passive. If there is a battery see where the wires go... to the controls then its active eq, to the pickups active pickups.

Looking at a new bass...have Carvin

I have only one thing to say: Musicman Stingray the most amazing bass ive ever played. Dunno what they retail for over there tho might be a little bit pricey. But they are amazing fluid to play and i think most of the models come with active eq as standard for tonal fun. Now all i gotta do...

Does this bass have "active electronics?"

Yes you can have active pickups in a bass (or a guitar for that matter) and these are a different thing from active electronics. Basically (as far as i understand it) active pickups have a built in preamp to give you a much higher output from the instrument. They need to be powered by a battery...

    My G string

If memory serves there are at least two occasions in history where america has joined a war at the last minute to look like heroes without all the effort...... and besides if we HAD been invaded by germany (bass wise at least) we'd all be playing Warwicks....

    My G string

I broke the A string on my bass once. It was towards the bridge end of the string so i guess that was aggressive playing.... In all fairness a string change had been overdue but hey, whats a guy to do.

    Paintjobs ? (Retry)

I need a little help with my bass

Playing finger style rather than with a pick might help to smooth out your sound a bit. Using a pick gives a more defined sound with more of that twang of which you speak.
