Does technology play a conscious part in your songwriting ?

There have been times an environmental sound or effect prompts a song idea. I'm a drummer so I usually start with a beat in my head and words. As I syncopate the song, I get to where I like it and then work out a melody to the syncopation. I'm old school so I look to the George Martin school of...

    electric bass recording techniques

I'm going to assume an electric bass. I like to have options. I use a direct box, the bass goes into the input, the output goes to the amp and the cannon connector goes into my converter. I mike the amp with two mics, one is a bass drum mic in close on the cone and the other is a small diaphragm...

    Building a New computer

These are the original specs for my system for animation and music. The guy who built it upgraded some of the components. Not the minimum requirements to run modeling programs, but not the maximum, either, and these are all top-quality components that prices like Dell and HP mark up...

New member and small room dilemma.

If the room were square I might add some acoustic blankets, the kind with grommets meant to be hung. But I think here the problem is the size of the room. Bass traps are probably your best bet. Look on Youtube for tutorials on constructing them. They don't have to be permanent. You might also...

    I think I have a ghost

Mine started doing that after about a year or two. I took the ratchet apart and replaced the material with a high density rubber from the hardware store. I super glued it onto place, drilled out the hole and then reassembled it. That solved it. Rod Norman engineer

Strained voice during recording sessions (also request for general feedback).

I've heard singers talk about an "open throat". If you start talking you might feel how your throat tends to tighten up. This can cause strain. (when you try to sing high notes you can really feel it.) Singers practice relaxing the throat to make it feel more open so the air is not being...

what are the parameters of compressing a vocal track?

Here are two links to youtube video tutorials on this. I hope it helps. You might have noticed that sometimes you have to use different settings depending on the vocal. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qfwes9URMyQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdGQTJ-1C1E Good luck, Rod Norman Engineer

Legal question for a qualified publishing attorney.

My good friend is a musicologist. She testified in several major cases including George Harrison's. She once told me that the real test is whether a reasonable person hearing your song would think of the previously established song instead. Walking past an office in my agency, I heard a...

    Drum mixing question

I listened to the samples. Although ringing, the snare is not unusable. In a drum set mix, the snare is the most personal and subjective drum. Some like it deep and thick and short, others like it high and sharp like a 2x4 hit with a hammer. In this case, with no way to retrack, I think the raw...

    eq monitors or not?

I'm a little confused. Are we talking about testing the monitors or the room? I thought you tried to get the room to read as flat as possible. Rod Norman Engineer

Thank you, John. I am working out how to mount my JBL 4311Bs and my M-Audio Pro nearfield monitors. Your advice here will help me a lot. Rod Norman

Process original tracks or process a group?

To the OP's question: I think of the live sound that I want to replicate. So I might eq toms individually (as in live sound), as well as vocal and guitars. For the best result, I then group to apply reverb (the space the band is playing in; I use only one reverb and one setting.) I might also...

    Drums: stereo or mono?

"The Seize" Very Gerry and the Pacemakers. Nice. The drums in mono are fine.

    Drums: stereo or mono?

Now that we all have more than four tracks, stereo drums seems reasonable. I agree that hard panning on close miking sucks but I like to place stereo overheads and then use those for the stereo spread. The rest I do in mono. The overheads create the sense of space. i once tried small diaphragm...

    Cable routing: any suggestions?

As a solution, laying cords everywhere might not work in many home studios. Stepping on cables is not a good idea. That's why I said it was easier to build a wooden channel.

    Cable routing: any suggestions?

The worst I've ever experienced was when we were doing a video and one of the band member's girlfriends was standing on a cable. We got microphonics then that showed up on the video and on the audio. That's why I suggested not tying them tightly. the 90 degree thing I heard years ago. It...

    Cable routing: any suggestions?

Audio snakes are designed and constructed to run together. Although there are many quality cables out there that would not be a problem, using ties to tightly bind individual cables is not a good idea and most home studios don't use the highest quality cables so I advised against running them...
