Help with Bass Drum Sound in Mixing

I did this on one of my recent projects and I got pretty good results. What type of music is this and what other instruments are in the mix? (can't listen at work) I have found that kick drum can be one of the easiest parts of the kit to rescue if the original sound wasn't tracked well...

    how to fix distorted snare??

don't you find the hits don't quite line up though? like you have to nudge them a bit?

    how to fix distorted snare??

thanks for the replies. I may try some sample replacement after all, at least in the songs where its most noticeable. Some stuff sounds OK, and although the orig snare track doesn't sound "good" in a traditional sense, it strangely sounds kinda cool in some of the songs. Its got character in a...

Using the Tascam 388 as a 2 Track

you would be better off getting a true mastering deck for this. but if you want to incorporate a 388 into some kind of hybrid setup, you could break out eight stems from Pro Tools and fill up the 8 tracks on the 388 (stereo drums on two tracks, vox on a track, stereo vox on two tracks, bass on...

    how to fix distorted snare??

    how to fix distorted snare??

thanks, I'll check them out. Pipelineaudio's stuff is very helpful. I have messed with drumagog before, and I always kinda got mixed results. once all the hits were lined up precisely with the original tracks, I could usually get a decent blend between the two, but i could never get drumagog to...

    how to fix distorted snare??

yeah, I guess this would be ideal, it takes forever to manually line those hits up, and I'm not getting paid for this, just recording a friend's band...

4 track cassette only good for demos, while real records are made on 2" Studer?

Doesn't it make sense to extend this line of thinking to any recording medium? Even (gasp!) DIGITAL?!!?

4 track cassette only good for demos, while real records are made on 2" Studer?

The biggest limitation of these machines is their low track count (especially four track portastudios). In a professional situation. You need to be able to accomodate a client's needs, whatever they may be. 4 or 8 tracks just doesn't cut it, even if sonically, those four tracks sound good...

    how to fix distorted snare??

so I kinda screwed up and hit the tape a little too hard recording this band yesterday. the snare is kinda distorted, the transient is kinda squashed. anything I can do here? I have tried some gating and compression to get it to pop a bit, and it kinda works, but I'm wondering if some of the...

    Recording Distortion Guitars

what kind of amp are you using? I am not a fan of digital plug-ins for guitar distortion, but I suppose they may work better comapred to a crappy amp (if you are using an amp at all?). are you using pedals? give us more info on your recording chain.

    Tascam 48 needs help.

are the reel hubs on the 48 attached like the 38s? could it be that the thumb screw that holds the hub to the motor shaft simply needs tightened? or maybe its simply a bad motor?? a PITA probably, but not a major repair.

Should I go analog, reel to reel, TEAC 3340?

sure, you can mix to a computer. I think analog qualities are retained even if you mix down to a digital format (though some may argue this)... If you are in a remote location then ebay is probably your best bet. but tell that seller to pack it securely and get insurance on the shipping in case...

Entry level Hardware Reverb vs. Waves Reverb

best argument against the hardware boxes. there are alot of free reverb plug-ins (I imagine there are even alot for mac, no?) there has got to be at least one that compares favorably to a $200 hardware box. Also, I recently had the chance to play around with Waves RVerb, and I was able to coax...

Should I go analog, reel to reel, TEAC 3340?

Are these ebay auctions? I would think that the selling prices are gonna go a bit higher in the end... With reel to reel, there are lots of other costs involved. do you have a mixer? cabling? then there is the cost of tape itself, and a de-magger... yeah, the TSR8 should be about the same as...

Should I go analog, reel to reel, TEAC 3340?

I would rather go digital than go to cassette, although drums tracked to cassette might be cool... I would say if you wanna go analog, make the jump to open reel. Yeah, you will spend time messing with the machine. Basic operation is simple, but learning how to maintain/troubleshoot/fix and...

    Cheap kick mike

I just got a PG52 in a trade. If i was paying MSRP, I would have maybe coughed up the extra $100+ for like a D112 or a good Audix mic or something, but I got this pretty cheap, and I tell ya, its not bad. I'm definitely getting better sounds with this thing than with a SM57 or my other "regular"...

    tell me about crash/rides

looks like the sweet ride may be about the same $$ as a giant beat... maybe I gotta spend a little more for something that sounds good... I'll check them both out. thanks for the tips.

    tell me about crash/rides

yeah I got a set of hats, they are 13" B8s. They sound OK to my ears, surprisingly. but my "cymbal ears" might not be developed enough to hear subtle stuff. generally, the low end sabian stuff sounds OK to me though. having said that, I wouldn't mind picking up a better crash ride, even if I...
