Have done much with nice mics for recording, but for live stuff a Beta 91 inside the kick and a Audix D6 right in the port sounded amazing. Can't go wrong with an SM57.

All the 1/4 inputs on the board should be balanced so it depends on what it is on the preamp. Usually boards have a -20 db pad on the 1/4 ins so if its a line level xlr that's at +4dbu then you should use the 1/4 to reduce the risk of clipping the board, but you could use a female xlr to 1/4 in...

I have some peavy drum mics. The tom mics almost make me throw up, but the kick is decent.

Try the other inputs on the board if you only have problems with the one channel then its pretty obvious. If is all the channels it could be a ribbon cable in the 4 track or the mic. If its the mic, I think that Shure will repair almost any of their mics for $50.
