I dont like 1176's, that much. I know when ones needed, and when it is....it's useful, but for me thats rare. The PL is cool. Its my final plug every time. If youre a vintagey, rootsey, organic type dude id get the 1176. If you are a modernist id opt the PL. Hate mailers please reply.

Personally i think Dsp's rule. Im running an old g4. Most of my mixes have around 30-40 tracks.....theres no way id get a good mix in the box with only naitive processing. I use the UAD, and PTHD2 and think they are great. Thats one side of the coin.....

Did you use a hh mic? If you did then just take it out of the mix at that loud points. Is it STILL to loud though? Ok last resort. Then youll need to backdown your overheads at that point in the song. Tricky stuff, because its usually pretty obvious when someone automates overheads...

Im at about three and three as well. I monitor quiet for the most part. Then jack it up and step away to check things at times. Just dont kill yourself with the volume.

Those sounds are usually achieved via Krank revolution 1, a Peavy 5150, or a Mesa dual/triple rectifier. Coupled with either a krank, Marshall, or Mesa 4x12 cabinet. Couple that with a tube screamer, or maxon od pedal to boost the input that the tube heads pre amp tubes will recieve. Thus...

What DOES a distressor sound good on anyways? Ive never used one.

I totally agree here. There is no sane reason not to wait until the stuff is tracked to apply a piece like the distressor. That way if you later find out that the dist. was the wrong choice you can simply remove it, and move along to something that does work in the mix.
