I dunno, there are so many things that could be wrong with it, it could turn into a money pit. nearly impossible to tell from the photos and description. big gamble IMHO. I would only pull the trigger on something like this if it was dirt cheap.

you're probably way better off recording to DAW than using out-dated technology like ADATs or VCR tapes. What is your current digital rig? lots of guys use DAWs as simply "tape decks" these days. they use a board for mixing and summing, use outboard effects, etc... You want to go at least...

if your cassette portastudio has a built in mixer, your really do not need an external one. don't make it more complicated than it has to be. every tascam portastudio that I have ever seen has tape outs for every channel, including my 424 which was one of the last generation of tascam...

I pretty sure that tascam dropped R2Rs quite some time ago. TSR8 was the last, and it went out of production about 10 years ago I think. Those Otaris are the last, and they're a 2 track mastering deck. if you want multi-tracking decks, you gotta shop the used market.

well, can't really afford the $200 it costs for an MRL. The TEAC was a bargain. I'm hoping to get it close, I realize its may be off a few dB. actually, the electronics are a bigger concern at this point...
