    Analogue - digital conversion

wow, that Allen & Heath mixer looks cool. I don't have much experience with high end A/D converters, but I think its a fair bet that like most of what you get in the audio world, there is a point of diminishing return. Its probably also dependent on whether the rest of your signal chain is...

Stepping into the World of Analog NEED HELP

you need to be more specific. you can spend a couple hundred, or you can spend tens of thousands. A quality 24 track rig is not cheap. Look at ebay auctions for Studer, MCI or Otari decks.

HELP! Did I get duped? AKAI MG 1212

Don't get NOS tape. re-read what was posted. put new 1/2" tape in the cartridges. search "sticky shed" I like to make music, not tinker with tape deck. In my opinion you would have probably been better off with an open reel deck. It depends on whether or not you like to tinker and/or scour...

    Just got this Otari...

OK, so its an older model. good look. that serial number indicates it was made in 1980, right? hungovermorning- You can use any snakes (I have Hosa) but you should switch pin 2 and pin 3.

    Just got this Otari...

wow, I have never seen an MX5050-8 that looks like that. what year is it? If you don't know, there is a way to date it using the serial number. what is your budget on the mixer?

    Just got this Otari...

you need cabling too. watch out cuz the MX5050-8 has unbalanced XLRs with pin 3 hot. threw me for a loop at first, I had to re-solder all my snakes. more people may jump in if you ask more specific questions.

    Sweet Deal MCI

wow. this is kinda close to me. I really don't have much space or use for the 1" though. The 1/2" sounds cool but again, I don't really need it... Now if it was a 2-track mastering deck, thats another story... I wonder if they have any other treasures they want to get rid of.

    Transferring from analogue to digital

M-Audio Delta 44 Its not FW or USB, its a PCI card. Kinda dated technology, as a result they are available for el cheapo. Look for used audio cards on ebay.

    Tascam 38+ m208 vs 388

If I already had the mixer I would probably just buy the 38. Especially if: 1- the 388 sounds like it may need some work, and if 2- the 38 is in better shape. yeah, tape is more expensive, but you can re-use tape too.

My first R2R Deck. How many tracks do I really need?

yep. it should be that easy.

My first R2R Deck. How many tracks do I really need?

Is the MSR16 a 1/2" or 1" format? cost of tape is something to consider there. when you say "DAW" what exactly do you mean? that AKAI unit looks like a standalone hard disk recorder, no? not exactly what I think of when I hear "DAW" these days... anyway, if you want an interface for your PC...

Tascam 38 - is it worth.......

yep, its all about the condition of the deck. chances are there are few things wrong with it: 1- at the very least, I'm willing to bet that its gonna need a new pinch roller, capstan belt, and the brake solenoids are prolly gonna be all gummed up. all the rubber has probably turned to goo. 2-...

My first R2R Deck. How many tracks do I really need?

sonic differences? yes, maybe. will you be able to hear them? I think that will depend on your monitoring, and whether your mics and board are good enough to reveal them. to the average listener? prolly not. I think all these decks will get you that "lo-fi" or "mid-fi" or whatever you wanna call...

My first R2R Deck. How many tracks do I really need?

nice stuff MAXRb. i'm assuming you know of the black keys, is that what led you to a 388? Tascam made 30-series 4 track decks (tascam 34) and possibly 40 and 50 series as well? Tascam 34s are probably the most common and the 40 and 50 series stuff seems a little harder to come by. Otari made...

Hybrid/MTC Possibility? Can this be done?

Don't underestimate the importance of simple workflow with minimal complexity. Do you wanna fool around with a recording set up or do you want to make music? You are talking about chopping up your drum performances and comping them together. That stuff is ideal for DAW land. I doubt simply...

My first R2R Deck. How many tracks do I really need?

well I would reccommend an Otari over anything tascam, but I get the feeling the OP has limited options. getting back to the original posters questions... why are you interested in two track decks? I think you may end finding the 2 track mastering decks much less useful than a four track or an...

Hybrid/MTC Possibility? Can this be done?

If you want to do hybrid stuff, don't bother with sync. I looked at it when I was getting my hybrid setup together. It seemed like it was making the whole process unnecessarily complicated. I would reccommend something like this: 1- fill up eight tracks on your tape deck 2- get an interface...

My first R2R Deck. How many tracks do I really need?

look for 8 tracks on 1/2". out of all the machines you mentioned, I would go for the tascam 38

OK What is this crap on my Otari mx70

Occam's razor dude. its definitely sticky shed tape. I ran some old 456 on my Tascam 38 and the tape path looked exactly like that when I was done. get a food dehydrator and bake the MRL for a couple days, it should be good enough to calibrate the deck. Close enough for rock n roll. the guides...
