need help with MX5050-8 reel height adjustment

so I figured out how to access the hex screws to adjust the reel table height, but the hex screws won't budge. it must have been years since they were loosened. I guess I'm gonna try squirting some wd-40 in there, I hope I didn't already damage or strip the head... any suggestions on getting...

need help with MX5050-8 reel height adjustment

I'll check it out, I actually do have a manual, prolly shoulda just checked there first. I don't think its the takeup reel, I'm using an old 5 screw 3M 996 reel. Is that what you would call a "high precision" reel? It seems much sturdier than the Quantegy and RMGI reels that actually have tape...

need help with MX5050-8 reel height adjustment

The takeup reel on my MX5050 seems low. As the tape winds on to the takeup reel, its rubbing against the bottom inside of the reel. It looks like the reel table simply needs to be lowered. Or possibly the guide needs adjusted or raised? It seems like an easy fix, but I can't seem to figure out...

    AD conversion on the cheap

also, I feel weird recommending a behringer product, but the ADA8000 gives you 8 channels of A/D conversion and Musicians Friend has them for $170 right now. I imagine you could get them a little bit cheaper if you looked used on the bay. As rough as some Behringer stuff is, these things get...

    AD conversion on the cheap

I have seen used Firepods go for less than $200, I think that would be a better investment than one of the M-Audio Delta PCI cards.

    Convince me to go analog.

Thats a great reason to go DAW. You think analog is that easy? I wish. I have spent nearly as much time screwing around with my decks as recording with them. You think those menus on that VF16 are hard to figure out with a manual? Try to figure out how to do a full calibration and head alignment...

    Convince me to go analog.

Tascam DA is like DAT or ADAT tapes, right? If you go digital, go DAW, and avoid ADAT like the plague. same goes for those stand alone hard disk units. its the worst of both digital and analog. there is a reason its so cheap. Also, one huge benefit of DAW is that some of today's plugins sound...

    Convince me to go analog.

1- Good tape machines are not portable. Even a tascam 388 is gonna be a bitch to lug around. 2- A good analog set up (tape + mixer + outboard) is not cheap. 2- Cassette formats can sound OK, but I think 24-bit digital sounds better than the best 4-track I have ever heard. I was not impressed...

Using Tascam M-216 INSERT as OUTPUT to Daw???

This might not work traditional analog recording, but its fine for recording to DAW. It sounds like it would work the same as my Mackie Onyx 1620 which is perfect for using as a front end of a DAW. The fact that the send is prefade is essential if you want to hardware monitor instead of...

    What counts

those Studio Projects mics tend to be bright and harsh, as do many of the low priced condensors... I have a C3, it helps to keep the vocalist backed a little further off the mic, although I find that I am using an SM58 on more and more vocalists. Recently tried my Oktava MK12 on vocals for the...

    Preparing for vinyl mastering

Prairie Cat does solid work: http://www.prairiecatmastering.com/vinylmastering.html He can pre-master (level out volume inconsistencies, EQ & compress the overall mix) as well as cut a lacquer. Located near Chicago I believe.

    Home Recording...need some tips

there is always going to bleed with condensors. they are, by nature, very sensitive mics. you can't track a guy playing acoustic guitar and singing at the same time, and expect one mic to pick up only vocals and another to pick up only the guitar. either overdub vocals later to eliminate...

Hybrid Technique - Analog + Digital + MIDI? Infinite Analog Tape tracks?

My hybrid setup involves tracking to 1/2" 8 track then dumping to DAW for mixing and additional overdubs. sometimes I bounce overdubs off tape on the way to disc to smooth stuff out, or slam it real hard for deliberate distortion effects (like for rock vocals). I'm pretty much working in the...

Stepping into the World of Analog NEED HELP

Do you mean an ATR-24? I dunno if I would bother with all that sync stuff, I would probably just get the extra channels of digital I/O. 16 channels is affordable to somebody on a $10,000 budget. Then thats another reason to keep the deck at a 16 track format.

looking for a channel card for an Otari MX5050-8

Anybody have a machine they are parting out? or know where I can get one? I'm having intermittent problems with the one channel on my MX5050-8, I had the relays and the switches replaced and its still giving me some problems. I'm thinking the easiest solution is to just buy a new one. been...

Stepping into the World of Analog NEED HELP

If you have that kind of budget I would skip the Tascam stuff. Maybe an Otari, MCI, Ampex. This 1" 8 track went on ebay not too long ago: http://cgi.ebay.com/MCI-Sony-JH110c-1-8-Track-Analog-Recorder-EXC-COND_W0QQitemZ220269385461QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item220269385461 only 8 tracks though. here...
