    Otari MX505 calibration help

OK, so much for that. test tape is sticky shed, it wouldn't even come clean off the reel. I guess I can try baking it in the oven tomorrow...

    Otari MX505 calibration help

so I got my TEAC test tape, and I got a Radio Shack multi meter... I want to try to get this deck set up before I record some stuff next Saturday. I have to go through the manual again, but the last time I looked at it the calibration process, it sorta left me scratching my head. I gues the...

    Making your own cables

didn't see this noted in the thread already so I'll mention it: better cables usually have better connectors that will last longer. they don't sound any different, but they stand up to abuse better. pass on that Monster Cable bullshit though... I bought a bunch of cheapo cables a few years ago...

Mix and master in digital, dump down to analog?

can you define "sonic depth"? I know i've posted this before, but I'll mention it again: i would take 24 bit digital over cassette formats, especially if we're talking about a machine like a 414. "If I were to do individual tracks, which instruments do you think would benefit the most from...

For those of you who rail incessantly on Behringer...

those bands are so crap too. hate it.

For those of you who rail incessantly on Behringer...

drums totally sound like triggers. doesn't matter what kind of gear you use if just sample replace. I would love to record a good amp/player/band with behringer preamps and mics over shitty amps and playing with A+ pres. this has probably already been said... whatever.

    searching for a good snare

on a budget, of course... thinking maybe a used Pearl free floater on ebay? I have heard some guys play these and they sound nice. I have been looking at the Pacific stuff too, how does that stuff sound? what is the quality like? its fairly inexpensive... I definitely want a wood shell...

    Suggestions for EQ on Bass

I guess I'm thinking of a couple times I had to mix bass tracks that had all kinds of bass stuff boosted in the low end. I think one occasion, it was a mic'ed bass cab, and there was just a TON of crap around 100 Hz, which may be fine for playing out, but it was just not right for recording...

    Recording drums with one mic

rent or borrow a few mics if you can?? I dunno, I used the recorderman technique one some overheads, and it got the whole kit pretty well with only two mics...

    Suggestions for EQ on Bass

you need much less "bass" in bass tracks than you think.

    i hate your kikc sound.

it depends on what the drummer is playing. natural beefy boomy kiks sound great and all, but if you want definition and you want to hear all the fancy crap mr happy feet is doing, you need unnatural clickiness.

    overhead compression?

yeah, from my experimenting, one of the things I have noticed is that overheads sound great with compression until you start hitting cymbals. hats/cymbals get too loud way too quick with alot of compression though...

    Anyone tried this for drums?

there is no need to align anything if your interface will record four tracks simultaneously. I track stuff (usually drums, bass & gtr) to 1/2" eight track, then transfer to DAW. I realize thats higher fidelity format than cassette four track, but I have been experimenting with mic'ing a kit...

    better than Audition?

not really free, but only $40 and worth every penny. Plus it beats the pants off Audition.

sa what is this backup project file in Reaper?

I have periodically updated Reaper, its hard to keep up with all of the updates and enhancements... anyway, at some point (maybe after 2.0?) it started to save a backup project file, so what is the point of that backup project file? anybody have any general tips on file management?

    Mackie Onyx 1620

I just traded a 1220 in on a 1620. Shop around and try to find a deal. If you can score a 1620 mixer for $600 or so, its totally worth it (FW adapter is additional $300 or so on top of that...). The pres sound good to me, and they get lots of praise. I use mine with an Otari MX5050 1/2" 8...

Analog tracking, dump for digital editing?

yes. I'm not really sure, I think the onyx was sorta unique when it came out being that it was a mixer that you could just plug a FW adapter into, rather than a dedicated audio interface. I think other manufacturers have copied this idea since. Three head decks have an erase head, a...

Analog tracking, dump for digital editing?

I like this hybrid stuff, I have been doing it since I bought a 38 in the springtime... I don't know specifics about your DAW and interface, but here is what I do: I use a Mackie Onyx mixer and Reaper and an eight track deck. The mackie onyx mixer is really nice for this, it lets me split an...
