    What is eq 1Khz ?

Pretty much everything. Well...not sine waves...but pretty much everything else. Actually, sine waves at 1k count.

    Amp left on standby

Actually, you probably flooded your house with TTR (toxic tube radiation). You should move away immediately unless you want that third arm growing out of your neck!

Modern Metal Guitar Tone - (w/ sample)

I don't know Amra, I think that a tone like that is still mostly just dependant on good tracking rather than any post production techniques. I've heard some similarly great tones from dudes who supposedly don't process the guitars save for maybe a bit of EQ. Do you ever check out the Andy...

how would you mix the vocals of these singers?

Every time I use it, it asks me if I'm sure I really want to, because it might ruin everything.

    Power chords Distorted?

I think you might have missed the part where you need the convolution plugin to begin with. You would put the convolution plugin on your track, and then insert the impulse you want to use and it will blend them. If it's reverb you want to achieve, your impulse would be sampled from a real space...

how would you mix the vocals of these singers?

Pretty close to 11.24 and with no more than about 22% spread top to bottom. Also be careful not to get too much overlap from the secondary sends (assuming you're using them...you should be, unless you're already maxing out on db's) and if the periphery is pushing too hard don't be afraid to do...

    Power chords Distorted?

Here's the wiki on convolution reverb: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Convolution_reverb It's usually used for reverb, hence the name, but the "real space" impulses can be substituted with impulses from things like analog hardware, guitar cabinets, etc. Capturing an impulse from a mic'd guitar...

    Power chords Distorted?

Do you have a convolution reverb plugin? You should try using a guitar cab impulse on a direct recording like that. It'll smooth it out alot.

    Power chords Distorted?

Just being honest, I could tell as soon as I heard those single notes that the chording was going to be bad news. You can hear a whole layer of nasty fizz on top of things. This is obviously some sort of serious distortion pedal at work, I'd lose it. Some other things that muddy up power...

Can't get a decent lead sound

I actually think that the lead tone is better than the rhythm tone. It's rather boomy and murky. The bad thing is, if you get more bite and midrange in your rhythm sound, it might be even harder to make the lead guitar stand out. :p The first thing I would do is a generous cut centered around...

    Micing Techniques

I vary between using a single SM57 right in front of the speaker and sometimes 2 SM57s also right in front of the speaker with one of them very much off-axis. I use the 2 mics when I want a rounded off or fatter sound, and I use one mic when I want a clear articulation in the tone. Whichever...

    Direct In Recording

The best direct sounds I've heard for metal involved a line in from a decent amp, and a speaker cab impulse response using a convolution reverb. I've tried it and I was pretty happy with the result. I can do it with my amp just loud enough to hear something to monitor my playing (much too...

Mastered version of a band I recorded:

Hey Eck. The second link I posted is what was sent to the mastering engineer. The dude that is mastering it is definitely a veteran. I've heard some great sounding albums (all extreme metal) that he has worked on. The thing is, I know that the band likes the searing midrange and high end...

    Mr Fastfinger

I know this has been posted before, but there are some kick ass new things on this site where you can study the sound of the modes. Plus this site is just too fun. http://www.guitarshredshow.com/

Mastered version of a band I recorded:

I don't know, you might be right. It's a shitload brighter than the mix that I gave them. I was a/b'ing it against my mix and it's so much louder and brighter that maybe I'm just falling for the louder is better thing. It definitely sounds better, and more like what the band will want I imagine...

Mastered version of a band I recorded:

What's up folks. I don't make it into the clinic much these days, but I had something I wanted to share. I posted some music from a band that I recorded several months ago, just my rough mixes, and these guys just got around to getting it professionally mastered. They went to a guy in...

    midi sucks

I use midi regularly. I've got two midi controllers, a keyboard and a drum pad. They both worked as soon as I plugged them in. I have no midi complaints. What the fuck, do I live in an alternate universe or something?
