    Fix-in-the-mix conun-drums challenge

I ran it through Tranx to bring back some transient attack. Then through MaxxBass to add some thump. Then through a nifty expander which breathed a little fake life into it. Then eq'd it to open up the sound a little... It's not perfect but much more usable than the original! I'll have a go at...

Ever lose your work to a hard drive malfunction?

I now have two harddrives, each with two partitions. 1 Programs & studio backup 2 Studio & other data Constantly backing up data on both harddrives just in case.. and also to DVD in case of theft. Paranoid, but safe!

    Fix-in-the-mix conun-drums challenge

Well, I'm aback in the studio and trying the play with the drum wav. Question 1. Is this sample supposed to be in mono? Question 2. Is it supposed to just stop? Question 3. Or was this just an example??? I have made it sound much cleaner and a touch more dynamic. If you post me the real file...

    Fix-in-the-mix conun-drums challenge

Waves TransX can add life to overcompressed drum tracks by increasing the transient attack of each hit. Just a suggestion to anyone who has it and has time. If no-one gives it a go earlier I'll try when I get back from work and throw you the results... It's works in the past (to a degree).

Ever lose your work to a hard drive malfunction?

I lost my first solo album due to my MAXTOR harddrive dying on me during mix down. I actually cried... what a girl! :( Later (six months on) I found out that my backing up was better than I thought and found 2 DVD's with all of the original audio on down the back of the desk! I lost a lot of...

    Does it Need "More"?

I understand the situation. I pitched mine to the mrs in a different way... I started buying everything at once and claimed that I would make the money back off quality CD's - Trouble is, every penny I do get from the studio goes back into the studio to get more equipment. :D You're...

    Does it Need "More"?

I'm actually a big fan of the tune! I don't mean to sound so shocked but it's fantastic to hear something that isn't trying to be dark/goth/thrash/danish/folk! :D A good honest song... brilliant. Reminiscent (especially in the verses) of Nick Drake... high praise indeed! What mic/preamp are...

Getting frustrated with how mixes translate

Thanks everyone. The thing that was putting me off making rigid fibreglass panels was the (simple yet time consuming) wood work frame designs. If it's ok just to wrap the stuff up like a present and hang it in the corners then I'll get down the DIY shop ASAP. It seems everyone has had some...

Getting frustrated with how mixes translate

Thanks guys. It does sound like a Dolby type HF reduction... very dissapointing! :( I can't really get my speakers closer together as the desk is pretty large (again left over from the 'proper' studio. I have just got a new job (yay! :D ) so will be able to pump some more cash into the...

Getting frustrated with how mixes translate

The room is tiny, a true box room... (9' x 7' x 8'). Speakers Behringer Truth B2031 Active (originals, not the re-release). These are approx 12" from the corners of the room with 2x 1meter square 3" thick acoustic panels on the mirror points to the sides. Rear wall is hollow. The high...

Getting frustrated with how mixes translate

I try to do that. But Alot of the albums I've got of a similar genre are Limited to hell. Very difficult to hear a good balance. Would be nice to hear some comparable tracks at mix stage... but that's another thread! ;)

Getting frustrated with how mixes translate

This one particular mix has: 1 male lead vox 1 male bvox - different singer 2 acoustic guitars panned 50% L&R Bass Full Kit I jangly electric guitar - pretty clean just accenting chords on chorus. ... Taking off everything below about 350 for everything except Bdrum and Bass. Reverb is...

software comp and eq for mixing ITB..

Very tricky one. I love a retro analogue sort of sound (think white stripes). The Renaissance Compressor and eq's are very nice (in fact the whole renaissance bundle is great!) but the eq's not really suitable for surgical work - thats more a job for the Q10 eq. What sort of stuff are you...

Getting frustrated with how mixes translate

:D lol. Thanks man. Glad to know I'm not alone! Not too sure if I can wait a year though!! ;) :p I find it strange. when the mids are too strong the highs sound almost muffled. Yet when I take off LOADS of mids the high end is glorious! I went for a warmish mic (Rode NT1000 through...

    Need some help

if it occurs only when playing back the mix within cubase it sounds like it could be a soundcard buffer size issue... what one are you using???

Looking for tips for using reversed guitar parts

YES! To have your part play forwards and still confuse people... Reverse it. add huge long reverb. then reverse it back again - so that the reverb starts first and, sort of, drags the notes out of the air... tres cool! ;)

Getting frustrated with how mixes translate

Yeah, I know my room acoustics suck - many members have given great advice (just waiting for the funds now). Still I can't work out why this is still the case with headphones. From what I understand they tend to have a hyped high and low (on the majority of headphones) but even taking this...

    Guitar proximity Effect

the best way to add this sort of depth is reverb. The brain judges distance by how clear the sound is. Most common is to have more reverb on everything else and less on vox so they stand out... seems yours may be the other way around.

Getting frustrated with how mixes translate

I hope I'm not alone in this... I spend Hours/days/weeks/months adjusting mixes until they sound good over my monitors and headphones. But I can't get them to lose the boomey sound that's making the mixes sound muddy and losing the clarity when playing back on 'normal' home audio systems. The...
