Let's hear it. It will be easier to help you.

Do i NEED to mic an amp?

Enough with the meaningless claims! Will somebody please post some blind clips so we can actually try the identification ourselves?

Do i NEED to mic an amp?

So bring it. Post blind examples of known amps and sims. Let's see how I do with the identification. What I said was that the result of having one tone for years on end is that your technique evolves into that tone. You play up the good and play down the bad. The sound directly influences...

    Focusing on harmonic overtones

Interesting... Make a copy of the track. On the copy, use either a high pass filter to remove as much of the fundamental as possible, or a bandpass filter to remove the fundamental and any nasty fizz up top. Then really compress the snot out of it. I'm guessing fast attack... You might have...

Do i NEED to mic an amp?

I don't think we're as far apart as it might seem. I also said I have no problem with sims and use them all the time. The difference is I don't think they can carry the primary guitar part in a production in most cases. This seems like a philosophical difference between the two of us. You seem...

Do i NEED to mic an amp?

You can say that again. And again I'm in agreement.

Do i NEED to mic an amp?

Neither would I. This isn't my day job. I don't take a project unless I love the song.

Do i NEED to mic an amp?

Yeah, I know this first-hand. And here is where we part ways. They can sound good on their own. They can sound as good as the real deal if you turn off cabinet simulation and send the sim through a real amp/cab. They can't sound as good as the real deal on their own. But this is all opinion...

Do i NEED to mic an amp?

Yeah, I guess this whole thing is different for a musician/engineer. But I would think that if you are a musician/engineer who doesn't particularly like the recording process, you would hunt down an engineer/musician who loves the recording process. They're different jobs for a reason, right...

Do i NEED to mic an amp?

I kinda' feel this way too. I need my sound. The actual mechanics of my fingers and palms interacting with the guitar are optimized for the sound my guitar and amp make. I would be a different guitar player today if I owned a different amp for the past 6 years. My single base tone can then...

    Best Sounding CDs Ever?

#1 in my book is always "Siamese Dream". I'll never forget hearing it for the first time. Cherub Rock is building up the intro...building...HOLY CRAP ARE MY SPEAKERS BROKEN?! That guitar sound is simply the most amazing thing that will ever be recorded. The drums kick some serious ass, too...

Do i NEED to mic an amp?

We all know the cliche about learning to walk before learning to run... This sounds more like trying to run before learning to crawl. ...Should you be trying to record a guitar tone before you know how to make a guitar tone? I'm not suggesting that anybody has to suffer before being...

Do i NEED to mic an amp?

You can't put a sim flat on it's back with a mic hanging from the ceiling above it. In a nutshell, the sim doesn't take into account even a fraction of the endless mic, mic position, amp position, crap in the room near the amp, etc options that one can do in the real world. Want the cabinet on...

Do i NEED to mic an amp?

Well...Here's the big "gottcha" with that... Greg can really play guitar. It doesn't matter all that much what he's playing through. It's gonna' sound pretty good.

    Snare Equalizing Help

Post the song so we can make a suggestion. Anything we say at this point would be pure nonsense otherwise.

Do i NEED to mic an amp?

It is not important to be able to make that differentiation. What if it is a shitty amp recording with tasteless post processing? Opps, I guessed sim. But if I was shown various recorded guitar parts I could tell you what ones sounded great. My guess is they would most likely be amps.

Do i NEED to mic an amp?

This sounds like a challenge! I've got a Crate at home so cheap you'd be handing me your spare change if you saw it. Let me see what I can do. :D

    unwanted guitar buzzing/distortion

Ah. Gotcha. Sounds more like noise than clipping or distortion. You just have noisy hardware. Honestly, with your recording levels set as they were in the second clip, it's really shouldn't be a problem in a full production. If it really is bugging you, then it might be time to buy a new...

    Californication - Horrible Quality

That's all well and good. It's still no excuse to produce sonic dogshit. And not everybody is a 14 year old with an Ipod. To anybody who does care, do what I did and get yourself a record player. For maybe twice the cost of an Ipod you can get a Pro-ject turntable and a receiver with a...

    unwanted guitar buzzing/distortion

Your second clip has no distortion at all. The sharp pop is definitely fret buzz. If you are hearing distortion on that second clip, you must be running into some problem with your soundcard's output. Do you hear distortion on that clip if you take it elsewhere and listen with headphones?
