This is probably not what you want to hear, but my advice is... Don't do it. Go back to desktop and stay away from laptop audio. There are a few decent usb modules out there for recording 2 to 4 tracks. Even a decent pcmcia card or two. But, the power is just not there (imo)....... yet.

Well, if you need 16+ io you might want to look at cards like the MOTU 24i. It seems pretty solid. You are going to need a pretty decent daw to run that kind of system ya know.

A switch to distortion is supposed to crash...not be smooth. From what others have said in the thread it seems you have other problems in your mix. Maybe if you solve those problems then it will bring the dist guitars out enough to crash while relaxing your clean track.

Exactly. Who knows. It has to do with hardware and the software/config you put on top of it. The benchmarks will be different. I doubt that the p4 is any more stable than the latest and greatest athlon. They are most likely pretty comparable. Here is my answer. Just get the best one you can...

Lexicon Core2 is a good buy and way under $500 bones. I have one here in the studio and use it often.
