    Digital Limiting SUCKS

:D Alright, gotcha Then I suppose you could benefit from some of the Waves plug-ins. Farview mentioned the L2, which is probably the next best thing to an actual outboard mastering compressor/limiter. A few good bucks, but a worthy investment. If it's not clipping, then it might just be a...

    Digital Limiting SUCKS

On a serious note: Your best bet in a situation like this probably falls under the whole saying, "simple might as well be better". The impression I get is that you want to try and smash everything as close to zero db as possible (correct me if I'm wrong). But rest assured, if that's the case...

    1 overhead vs. 2

Normally you'd reserve your best two condenser's as overhead mics. The reason you even have overheads is to capture the stereo image of the drumset. It's best to be a matched pair, but there isn't an engineer patrol waiting for you to make a mistake, just about anything goes. At minimum, you...

    Too Much Dust

It sounds like good ol fashioned labor to me. :D Dust happens, air filters or not. The only difference being the army of interns cleaning it up or not.

    Digital Limiting SUCKS

why limit in the first place? I like the quote that says, "if it sounds good, then it's good".

    Stupid Reverb Questions

Yeah After a while, you learn that reverb can be one of those things that can make all the difference or simply kill it. It's really just a matter of personal taste and trained ears. You could apply a very light hall reverb to an overall mix. However, that pretty much takes away the purpose...

Adding final touches to home studio

Invest in some nice gold plated high end wiring. But just as important, invest in a nice mic of your choice. Alot of times, people come to record when they know what mic's you have.

creating balanced mixes(between left and right speakers)

If you mix everything to fair standard, you shouldn't have a problem with the stereo mix as a whole. You might just need to take a different approach to the mixing aspect.

whats so special about Waves plugins???

Its basically because of the mathematics involved behind the programming of the plug in. Im my opinion, they can do almost what outboard gear can, with some advantages and setbacks. But in this digital world, why not use the 4grand piece of software? :D

Whats the point with big consoles?

Simply put: Routing options Flexiblity increases exponentially The electronics and automation aspects Probably most important, you have preamps and circutry in large format consoles that blow almost any stand alone gear out of the water

    Sample Rates, Mastering, Who knows?

This may have been answered..... What you have to understand is that good sound is alot more than just mixing technique, it's the equipment you use. Mics, cables, outboard gear, your wiring to your recording interface...all that has to be its best to get the best sound. That makes perfect...

How much $$$ do you charge??

Depending on how good the job is, or what area, could range anywhere from 60-100 an hour or 200-2000 per song.

1/4 Vs. S/PDIF Vs. Digitally rendering

It would probably help to run through a DI box of some sort, just incase you have impedance problems. Plus it balances any signal you put through it. Usually quarter jack or/XLR outs are prefered since they are usually balanced. But if not, the DI box should take care of that for you.

    The signal chain.

You wouldn't want to put your outboard gear before your pre since your preamp is what brings up your signal up to line level. So the signal flow goes as follows: Mic-> to mixer-> Outboard comp-> your soundcard As for the advice that guy told you, probably better to disregard it. ;)

    My Deliema

The funny thing is that this sort of thing comes from experience. You eventually learn that your friends are like your family, they won't be your most critical customers. When you can start pleasing people you have no connection with, then your job becomes interesting and rewarding. my...

    acoustic foam

The info you got going on is good reference and it's a start. Just watch out for corners and hot spots in the room where sounds will collect and create standing waves. The parallel walls will work against you, so watch out for that, too. About the sub, that's very risky in a room like that...

Alright, but if you tell anyone, I'll have to kil....nah man, of course I'll be willing to share some info. After all, that's why I even spend some time everyday on this thing...it gets the gears going before the long work day. :D Anyway, my procedure in any studio: 1) Set the coffee machine...

How to have inputs to mixer get recorded also

Thanks Evan, you make your point as elegantly as ever. :D And it's true, I don't want you guys to misunderstand me. I'm only saying that there are better ways to get a better recording, just trying to open yazoo up to other ideas. ;)
