The muted note is a bad filter/amp chip. They are proprietary parts that Roland no longer supplies. Email me to remind me to look up the guy who makes custom replacements for this.

That machine was my first R2R too. I didn't have a clue about using it when I got it home. The manual told me everything I needed to know to get rolling though. Don't freak out. Just start reading, trying and understanding your machine. You'll be fine. They aren't as fragile as you think.

Most of the above will apply to XLR cables. Since those are physically larger it is actually alot easier to work with them. I only wish I had a tube mic - gosh people are so spoiled... ;)
